DAILY TSTEWB. SAT?BDAY MO UNI Ml. pKraMliKll J?, 1WH. Trade ut Xiv; Orleans. [From the Ario Orleans Times, Dec. 1.] Thc first quarter of" thc financial and commer? cial year 1SC5 and 1SGG cloaca this evening.-In sonic respects business lias been attended with . great regulante, PO far .is thc gmt product, cot? ton, has been concerned, lt will bc remembered for several wt i ks cotton ruted steady at from 40c. to 44c, then advancing to 50c and 52c. so thai thc fluctuations have not ueeu large, though at ouc time there were several hasty purchases at from 56c. to 58c. aud 60c, which wc regret to learn proved anything but remunerativo lo ship? pers, while in other respects there have boon some highly advantageous results. Por tho past three months thero bas been a large ami active business with Mobile and South Alabama, and with South? ern Texas there has been a remarkably heavy busi? ness. Cargoes have followed cargoes of produce and merchandise for Galveston. Business wi til Eastern Texas, or tho northeast part of tho State via Red River, has bcon materially interrupted by thc low stage of water in Red River. Thcro is un? doubtedly something encouraging in store from that section, whilo with Mississippi, through Natchez, Grand Gulf, and Vicksburg, thero has been a steady flow of business. Nor can tho improvement and increase with the country bordering on tho Jackson Railroad bo overlooked as forming a component part of tho general recuperation of business. With Memphis there is nothing in thc way of an incroase compar? ed with former times to remark on. There have been a fow hundred bales of cotton received from that section which in former timos waa represent? ed by tcno of thousand balee o? tho staple. Thc Bales of cotton for tho thrno months now closing ?mount to about forty-three millions of dol?at e. Tho receipts of sugar havo boon so reduced that wc have not at any time for tho past three months bad anything moro than a shadow of a sugar Mid molasses market. Tho importations of foreign merchandise have been steadily enhancing during thc quarter, and under tho depleted supplies ano general stocks throughout tho Lower Mississippi valley, Alabama and Texas, eales have been liber? al, and goncral returns and rosults , ;ghly satis? factory to importers. Taking all things into view, thc quarter terminates as satisfactory and remu? nerative as could bc expected. Wo enter the se? cond quarter under considerable feeling in thc general political aspect of thc oennlry, which may in somo degree have great influence on commer? cial and agricultural, fl nanda] and social inter? ests as tho season advanceu. Wc hopo for the best. .Tho exchango market to-day offered nothing for either general or special remark. Tho bank coun? ter rates for checks on New York opened at three eighths to one-half discount. Under light offer? ings of commercial bills rat';? advanced one-eighth during thc day. Thcro was little or nothing done at two of thc loading counters in tho w.-.y of buy? ing. Thc most important transactions were salis of ?.3090 at 15?^; a round amount of Uobilo bill Is.ding drafts, et rung, tit 158; ?14,000 city drafts, av ?3vS; to lS8j; sonic smaller eu tn J at 1.171 to l./S.J and 1531-say ?10X10. ?20M0 and JUJoOO. Porty thou? sand Af francs at 3.57 .j-an advance; fifty thousand at 3.58.?. There was very little done in New Yode funds. Some sight was taken at one-half discount, and one da>'? sight at five-eighths discount. The coan'or rates for discount advanced an eighth du? ning thc day, though at a leading counter there was uo deviation during thc day. Conos.-Tho market opened this morning with a fair inquiry ut yesterday's prices, but factors fooling reassured by thc favorable reaction at Liverpool being confirmed in tho morning papers, and the New York aeoounts being less discourag? ing, were unwilling lo moot the demand unless at rather stifler rates. Later in tho day, however, tho movement was resumed at regular prices, showing on tho whole little or no change, ami tho reported sales comprised 2250 balep, mostly in accordance with the* following ,;.;;>':ations ; Ou?d Ordinary, 45c. a 47c; Low Middling, 45e.; Mid? dling, 50c, and Strict MidJilCg 52c Wo say '-ibo TvtiOrtti ?i?es," for tho abovo includes 2S? bales tauen by ono buyer yesterday, more than ho re? turned at the time, which really swells yesterday's business to nearly ?ilOO baloe, and reduces to-day's to about 2000. Tho dom and was mostly for foreign export, and received some stimulus from thc ad? vance in foreign exchange On the other hand, tho market was unfavorably aifectc:! by rumors that private telegrams had boon received from Now York qnotinn-Tdiddinssr dull at Gie. if Mo. -- OTAYK>sjr!sr or corroo:. 8t?ek ou huaC loi .September, 1S63.bales 8J.230 Recoived to- tay. Com and oats are very scarce and iu request, whilo most other articles ero ill good supply and extremely dull at drooping prices. FREIGHTS.- There is less disengaged ttuuiugo on thc berth, and better rates arc hoing obtained. Thc rates are Ijc. per pound for cotton and $1 per bbl. for flour by steamers for New York and Bos? ton, lc per pound for cotton and 80c per bid. for v flour by sailing vessels. Foreign freights are un? changed. .They ure id. foi-cotton for Liverpool !>v sailing vessels, and ljc for Havre. Tho stoamor on the berth for Liverpool is taking colton at jd. ?,d. per pound. A correspondent from Florence makey brief mention of thc Aniorican sculptor, Powens, aud tho works he has now in hand : And then, again to turu to tho producer himself ami Iiis famous s tedio in tho Via do' ?Ser?gli.
