James Jones, long one of South Carolina's faithful eorvunts, and always Identified with her either in prosperity or affliction, died at Granltoville on tho 19th Instant, of apoplexy. He wus for many years Adjutant-General of the 8tato, also Chairman of the Visiting Committee of tho Citadel Acadomy, and lat terly ho superintended tho construction of tho Now Capitol at Columbia. South Carolina has never lost a son who loved her with moro affection, or who was more dovotcd to her In tho . severe trials through which she has passed. Attempted Escape.?A corporal of tho 33d Colored Regiment, while walking iu Broad-street, near King, on yesterday afternoon, with ono of the United States Po lice, who hod him under arrest, attempted to escapo, and While running paiit the Guard Houso was Intercepted and taken by same of tho members of the 47th Permsylvauia, who nro stationed there. Some ten or twelvo colored soldiers, ? ho had been following tho policeman with tho prisoner, then stepped forward and attempted a rescue, but tho 47th wero too strong for them; so thoy were all put under a" guard with loaded muskets and sent off, tho guard receiving orders to shoot down the first man who attempted to escape.
