A DEGRADED SOLDIER-In passing the corner of Broad and Meeting-streets, yosterday, we saw a fine looking soldier, a member of thc 47th Penn. Vol., standing on a barrel, as a punishment, we presume, with a placard marked "thief1 attached io his back. It ?H a melancholy reflection that a man who has faced "danger at the cannons w mouth," should so far forget himself as to be liable io such, disgrace, and so public, a degradation. Wc hope this example will bc jo salutary as to pre? vent a repetition of this peculiar punishment. NICKERSON'.S HOTEL.-By reference "to an adver? tisement in our paper to-day, it will be seen that" this establishment in Columbia is now open. To pass encomiums upon tho ability of such a veteran in his business as Mr. NtCKEnsoN, is certainly not our province, for his praisos aro in everybody's mouth. We congratulate our sister city on the re-opcning of a fine hotel, under tho former cour? teous and obliging proprietor, fon R.V?EBOAD TRANSPORTATION.-Thc great pov? erty of our people is evidenced by the tardiness with which our railroads aro being repaired. Presidents und directors aro persistent in devel? oping such resources as they can command; but funds are scarce, and every bar of iron and every ,. cross-tie has to be paid for in money. At the present rate of reconstruction, it will bc some time yet ere thc locomotivo will range over its for? mer extended routes. In tho mean time travel goes on-the primitive times of May and J une, in back-arcaliing, side-aching wagons are passed, and .we now ride on springs, in comparative comfort. But a new business has also been developed out of the necessities of thc times. Every village in thc up-country now has its enterprising store? keepers-stocks of goods are permeating to every district, and thc work of transporting merchan? dise to all these distant points, and tho hauling of cotton to the headsOf our railroads, has developed , . a wagon business wliich brings to mind those | J long-a-go times when railroads were not. and when thc sharp crack of tho whip, and the merry .ginglo of bells, cold of prosperity on tho old Charleston business mart, which centered around the "Buiv8 Head Tavern," on King-street Road, JO??JJ kept in great comfort by our now venerable townsr. An, T. W. JOHNSON. But ou intention was to speak of th* facility with which our country friends now dispatch their cotton to Charleston and receive ::i exchange their as-sorted stocks of merchandise for thc local trade. The-business of transportation Laving been sys? tematized, nothing is easier than to sell the cot? ton and deliver it in Charleston, buy a stock ol' goods herc, and have them transported to any part of the interior. IM the matter of forwarding, wo direct attention to the card of Mr. WM. A. COURTENAY, at Newberry Depot. Information in regard to ap freights can bc had on application to jyTr. H. B. OLNEY, NO. ll Vendue Range. MAX MARETZER ON THE N. Y. HERALD.- I have never regarded it as a tic of affection between the editor of thc Herald and myself that we both hap ' pened to bc of the same religion, nor do I accept * it now as a reproach that I am of Jewish descent. Most of thc Christians I have met with in this world were amenable to thc same charge. Further . more, there is nothing in the Constitution of thc United States to prevent my heh- even a Jew. You will agreo with nie that we may ooth believe in a * creed without doing much credit to it. I am not sure that thc precepts of Christianity have been Observed by you, Mr. Bcnuett. When cowhided and ?nat upon on thc one side, you have not meek? ly turned thc other for equal chastisement. Do ?ot I remember that once upon a time you took refuge, like a craven, behind thc crinoline of a | t iady, just as now you try to screen yourself. Were you thc champion of thc widow and the orphan when you hunted a helploss husband to the grave nv the' fear of persecution ? Docs your righthand know what your left hand does in thc way of char? ity-or docs anybody else's hand know? You boast of your wealth," but' it cannot buy you respect nor a proscenium box at thc opera. But this you ' can do : give the cost of thc proscenium box which ! von have occupied to the scandal of every opera habitue for three years, to some charity-say half to a Christian and half to a Jewish hospital. The ama!! change, if any remain, can he handed to the Boving DipToaut, with the compliments of MAX MARETZEK. Staten Island, September 1,18<w. Mr. Dana, late Assistant Secretary of War, passes Iiis whitewash brush over Gen. Halleek thus : "Wo do not hesitate to declare that, during the whole period of General Halkck's residence in Wash? ington, whether as General-in-Chief or as Chief of Staff, his services, both as an adviser and exeeu tive ofiicer, were of great importance and value." j ' Prince Natioleou has been spending large sums J ; at the Dublin Exhibition. The papers praise him j : extravagantly--because ho is extravagant, no ? doubt. WICKE?SON'8 HOTEL, COLUMBIA, S. C.
