Local News. WEDNESDAY, MAY 21, 1902, Tlie New Colton Mill. A talk with Mr. J. A. Brock aud Mr. U. E. Ligon developed the facts that the work of erecting tho new $500,000 cotton mill will probably begin within the nest thirty days. The capacity of the n tit will bo not less than ?0,000 spindles and 700 or 800 looms. There will also be in connec tion a large dyeing and finishing plant. The class of goods to ho manufactured will be different from any manufac tured in this section heretofore. They wJIl be ginghams, madras ami dometts, or flannelettes. This will be a new de parture, but by no means au experi ment. Tho experimental period has been passed; our industrial develop ment is ripening into rapid progress and this departure is ?juite natural. The machinen' to be used will not differ materially from the machinery used in tho manufacture of sheeting except in the looms. These will be quite difierent, and, ol course, the goods produced will be in colors. The mill building will probably be two stories only, and with the dyeing and finishing plant and the IV" cot tages to be erected for the operatives, will cover about seventy-live acres of ground. The location has not been definitely decided upon. The advan tages of several locations are heiug discussed. In all probability the loca tion selected will be along the Blue Kidge Kai h oad between the Anderson cotton mills and the Cox mill. This property belongs to Mr. H. E. Ligon aud contains IMG acres. It Is a very desirable location, both in point of healthfulness and shipping facilities, and it is understood that Mr. Ligon is offering it very low. While her? for the purpose of securing tho conn act foi drawing the plaits of the mill, Mr. C. IL Makepeace surveyed this prop erty, but it was \ olvntary on Ins pui r, v? :t view to Raving expeu.se in the !.: tl lis location was decided upon, -..cured the contract for thcengi ..-ork and Iiis assistant, Mr. Bib <MM.-nein, of Spartanburg, will have charge when the work begins. The power used will be steam. This is due principally to the fact that sufii cient electric power cannot be furnish ed by the Water, Light and Power Company in addition to furnishing the Anderson cotton mills, Orr mill nnd the many minor industries of the city. A commission to organize has been granted by tho Secretary of State to J. A. Brock, IL E. Ligon, N. IL .Sullivan, J. E. Barton, Geo, W. Evans and IL S. ?Ligou, in pursuance of which the books of subscription were formally opened in the Court room yesterday and will continue open at the Bank of Anderson until our people at home, desiring to do so, have had an opportunity to sub scribe to (lie stock. Of lhe 8000,000 capital it was decided that ?lOO.OOOor more should be furnished by people here, and this is being very cheerfully done. The remainder of the capital stock is in easy touch of Messrs. Ilrock and Ligon when our people get through. The name decided upon for the mill is "Brogon" cotton mills, the word "Brogon" being formed by a combina - tion of th? first three letters of the name Brock and last three letters of the name Ligon. This was suggested by many and appears quite appropriate. While North, Messrs. Brock aud Ligon visited several large concerns that furnish mill machinery and are in a position to close promptly and with out additional expense contracts for all needed machinery. Every detail has been carefully look ed after by these thorough business men and the beginning of work is only a question of a few weeks at the out side. At tho meeting of tho subscribers of stock, hold in the Court room yester day, a majority of stock subscribed be ing represented, the commission to or ganize was read, the lists of stock sub scribed wore accepted, by-laws adopted and the following board of directors elected: J. A. Brock, R. E. Ligou, J. E. Barton, IL S. Ligon, Geo. W. Evans. C. S. .Sullivan, V. G. Brown, local, and G. M. Whitiu, of Boston. Gue other director will be elected later and will be a Northern mau. The subscribers, meeting being ad journed a meeting of the directors was held and the following ofiiccrs elected : ,,T. A. Brock, President; IL E. Ligon, \ ve President and Treasurer; C. J. Ern?&a Secretary and Assistaut Treas urer. In th? afternoon the directors visited the differeut locations being consid ered. Sudden Death of Mr. Kay. Anderson County lias lost another good citizen in the death of our vener able friend, Silas Kay, which occurred suddenly at his home in Hopewell ?Vswnship last Sunday morning.
