A WORD TO FARMERS. One Who is I heir Friend Points Oui the Way for Continued Prosperity. Ji7!tor O'nt II fi I lr Xe ivs: With your permission it is my intention to call the attention ol' the fanning portion of our constituents to a few economic facts wi.ich 1 hope they will at least i'on s i der. Few ol' us ever again expected to -oe ten cents cotton. We have seen it this fall, and in my opinion will set it again before the grass begins to grow. Neither thc McKinley admin istration nor the intelligent, united action of the cotton raiseis is respon sible for the advance, but to an all wise God is due all the credit. He sent the drought and caused other un favorable conditions- from a human standpoint-which resulted in a har vest of at least one-third less than it would have been had conditions been ii? "favorable" ... wn hm ..<.' for; and as a result, ?astead of selling our cot t3n at six cc its, wc will receive nine to eleven ce iU, and possibly more. The farmers now have absolute con trol of thc situation and can keep it if they will, but the chance? arc that they will not. Thc opiuion is abroad in the land that thc world actually needs at least 12,000,000 bales of cotton and that the South can produce that many or more next year and get from eight to ten cents for it. It is my purpose to try, while it is yet time, to show the readers of thc News that thc proposi tion is absurd. For the saka of argument, wc will admit thrt 14,000,000 bales of cotton are necessary annual1}* to clothe the world: but while we admit it for thc reason stated, still wc are not sure that so much is required. The reason why cotton has been selling at a less price than thc cost of production for thc past several years was not because of excessive produc tion, but because thc world knows the conditions under which cotton is pro duced in the South, and that under our credit system not less than three fourths of it must bc sold by Novem ber 15 of each year, and that although it may bc worth 10 cents a pound to the manufacturer, he can buy it at live and, therefore, will not pay any more. No sensible business man will pay $1.00 for an article that he knows he can buy for T>0 cents. If the far mers were in position to hold their 14,000,000 bales of cotton and only sell when the price was satisfactory, why then they could get 10 cents every year, because thc world is com pelled to have thc cotton. Cotton is high this season because the Lord has not allowed a full crop to bo made. There is not enough to go round, and those manufacturers who fail to buy all they need to keep their mills busy during thc next twelve months, or until another crop is made, while it is in sight, will be forced to close down during the latter part of next year. The manufacturers appreciate thc situation and the wise ones, not only in tho South, but all over the world, aro buying every bale that is offered. There is no doubt of the fact that ibo condition of the far mers in Greenville and Pickcus coun ties, and in fact throughout the Pied mont section, is moro favorable than it has been for years past. This id ; not due to 10 cents cotton, but is attributable in a great measure to the I fact that during the past fow years they have been living on home-raised j hog and hominy and have been more economical generally than for several years previous. T.? st fall they sowed a larger area of wheat than ever be fore, and as a result hundreds oi them have not only been living on home raised bread since thc bountiful har vest of last summer, but have been able to spll thousands of bushels of surplus wheat at almost identically the eame prices as prevailed in Chi cago, and by this means have obtained a supply of ready oash et a season oi the year when it is calculated to bc especially helpful on the farm. The writer urges every farmer ir this section to sow a larger area ir wheat and oats this fall than last Sow at least ten acres lo every plow and sow it on good ground and put il in properly. Oiscard the liok-and-n promise methods that have been ir vogue with us so long in regard to pre paring land, fertilizing and seeding everything except cotton. Propel preparation of good land, liberally fer tilized and sowed with good seed, wil pay as well with wheat or oats as witl cotton. It is no** time that thc laud was be ing prepared, and thc sooner th work is done the better. In .'.err o the fact that the average farmer ha had little experience in wheat culture I will fpresume to explain what i meant by proper preparation t so^d'o and fertilization: In t? o first place, every acre c ground that is to be sown in wheat c oats should be broken with a tw< hprse turning plow to a depth of si J or seven inches. Thc land ghoul then be harrowed two or three timi with a disk harrow In order that: rnaw ht> t-horou'h!0 pulverized. ] should then bo allowed to stand : least two weeks in order that it may become firm. All grain should bc put in with a drill. Wheat should be soaked in a solution of blue stone at least twelve hours before heine, sowed. The most satisfactory fertilizer on good ground is 10 2 acid phosphate, at the rate of 150 to 200 pounds to thc acre. Where the land is poor, am nioniated goods should he used at the rate of not less than 200 pounds to thc acre. Under no ciicumstances should exceeding three-fourths of a bushel of sued be sown to the acre, :md where a drill is used one-half bushel is ample. If the foregoing instructions arc followed a good har vest may be expected with reasonable certainty. Thc farmers of this section have ex ceptional advantages so far as raising wheat as a money crop is concerned over those of any other section "f the State. There arc two mills in Green ville that together can usc not less than 300,000 bushels of wheat during every twelve months. Tiny are operated by honorable business men with ample capital, and will bc pleased to buy every bushel of merchantable wheat odored them at the ruling mar ket price for cash. A great deal more might bc said as to the advantages of living at home and also of raising wheat as a mcney crop, but we hardly think it necessary at this time. Iti conclusion, permit me to say that if the farmers of this section, now that they are practically free and independent, ever again allow them selves io be deluded into the idea that they can raise cotton exclusively, even at ten to twelve cents a pound, and keep out of debt, when they get tied up again it is to bc hoped that they will take their medicine like men, and not abuse Wall street, thc trusts, cotton mills, thc merchants and everybody except the real culprits -themselves. "FARMERS' FRIEND." October 22, li?00. <m * mm ?v . There Was a Man in thc House. Thc other evening as a muscular person was passing a house, a lady, woo stood at the gate, called out to him: "Sir, 1 appeal to you for protec tion." "What is tho matter?" he asked, as he stopped short. "There's a man in the house, and he won't go out of doors, though I have ordered him to." "lie won't, eh? We'll see about that." Thereupon the man gave thc woman his coat to hold nd sailed into the house. Ile founu a juan at the supper table and took him by the neck nnd remarked: "Nice stylo of brute you are, ch? Como out of this or I'll break every bono in your body!" Thc mau fought, and it waa not until a chair had been broken and thc table upset that he was hauled out of doors by thc legs and given a fling through thc gates. "Now, then, you brass-faced old tramp, you move on, or I'll finish youl" "Tramp! Tramp!' ?houted tho vic tim as he got up. "I'm no tramp. 1 own this property, and live in thc house!" "You do?" "Yes, that's my wife holding you] coat." "Thunder!" whispered thc muscu lar man as he gazed from one to thc other and realized that it was thc wife's method of finishing a row she had been having with her husband And then he made a grab for his coal and disappeared into tho darkness. The uses to which eggs may bc put aro many, aside from their employment in cooking. A mustard plaster nude with thc white of au egg will not leave a blis ter. White of an egg beaton with loaf sugar and lemon relieves hoarseness a teaspoonful taken every hour. Au egg added to the morning cup of coffee makes a good topic. A raw egg with thc yolk unbroken, taken in a glass of wine, is beneficial for convalescents. It is said that a raw egg if swallow ed at once vhen a tish bone is caught in thc throat beyond tho reach of thc fingers, will dislodge thc bone aud car ry it down. Tho white of au egg turned over a burn or bcald is most soothing and cooling. It can be applied quickly, and will preventinflamation, besides re lieving thc stinging pain. One of tho best remedies in case of bowel trouble is a partly beaten raw egg taken al one swallow. It is beal ing to thc inflamed stomach and intes tines, and will relieve thc feeling of distress. Four eggs taken in this man ner in '?I hours will form the best kind of nourishment as well as medicine for tho patient. A raw egg is oue of the most nutri tious of foods, and may bc taken very easily if the yolk is not broken. A lit tle nutmeg grated upon thc egg, a few drops of lemon juice sprinkled over it, or some salt and a dash of cayenne pepper, vary the flavor, and tend to make it more palatable when taken as a medicine. Thc white of a raw egg is the most satisfactory of pastes, and is better than any prepared mucilage or paste oncean buy. Papers intended to be put over tumblers of jelly and jam will hold very securely and bc air-tight if dipped in thc white of an egg. Must Bc introduced. A good-natured young fellow was at a rustic picnic, and rashly spoke to a young lady without tho formality of an introduction. Ile happened to sec a fat caterpillar crawling on her lace collar, and, jumping toward her, said: "Madam, pe.mit me to-" But the young lady waved him of! with an imperious and insulting ges ture, and said: ' How dare you speak to mc without an introduction? You arc certainly no gentleman, sir." Herc the caterpillar overbalanced itself and fell ou her neck. "Vouch! Oh! tako it off! Oh, please, do take it off, somebody!" screamed the fair one. Thc young man was thc only somebody" about, and he said: "I couldn't think of it, madam; 1 haven't been introduced to tho Cater pillar."
