They will treat you right. Messrs. 0. E. and M. C. Horton, ot Atlanta, w ere in the city Monday and gave us an appreciated call. They came over last week on the sad mission of attending the funeral of their father. These young gentlemen are popular and energetic lawyers in the "Cate City," and are building up a line prac tice. Last Friday evening, about 7 o'clock, the blacksmith shop of Mr. J. P. Todd, located j ust across the street from the County Jail, came very near being de stroyed by fire. When the alarm sounded',the Hames were shooting above the roof, but the firemen soon arrived ind had the tire under control in a few minutes. Mr. Todd was insured for 3350, which will about cover his loss. The headquarters of A. C. Merrick, Deputy Collector, have been transfer red from Greenville to Walhalla. Greenville, Spartanburg and Cherokee Counties have been transferred to an other District and Mr. Merrick author ized to establish his office at Walhalla. His jurisdiction now embraces the Counties of Oconee, Pickens, Ander son, Abbeville, Greenwood and Lau rens. The Greenville Nam of yesterday says: "Her friends in the city will be glad to learn that the condition of Mrs. Charles Manly, formerly of this place, but now (d' Lexington, Missouri, who lias recently been critically ill, is im proving. That sensational comedy drama, "Side Tracked," will bet lie attraction at thc Opera House next Monday night Oth inst. The Company isa strong one in every particular, and has been ap pearing before large and appreciative audiences in other cities. The special ties, consisting of up-to-date songs, dances, duets, trios and choruses, are given in a very capable manner. The principal ligure in thc drama is a tramp, through whose persistent efforts a mys terious crime is finally cleared up. This character is assumed by E. il. O'Connor, who is deserving of much praise for his performance. He is a elver singer and dancer, and is tobe commended for overcoming the per ceptible temptation to buffoonery. Billy Bowers, as Fritz Grabhold, a Geilnau section gang boss, makes many friends by his specialties. L. C. Yeo mans has a good face and ligure which, together with his ability as an actor, makes him one of the favorites of thc east. Harry Leslie, as Miles Welling ton, the express agent, and li. Edgar Yance, as Judge Pecksniff, of Johnson boro, arc excellent in their respective characters. Gertrude Hai nes, the sou brette, establishes herself as a decided favorite by her natural acting and songs and dances. Cecile Lorraine, Mar guerite Mayfield and Josephine Rob erts appeared to advantage in thir dif ferent character. Mr. John C. Horton died suddenly at his home in Pendleton Township on Tuesday night, 24th ult. He was ap parently enjoying his usual good health, and that night ate a hearty supper. He retired about his usual hour with his son, Mr. M. H. Horton, and ?1 little two-year-old grandson, who was in his anns. He conversed a short while with his son, and then made a few re marks to the little grandson. In a short while the son heard him make a peculiar noise like he was grasping for breath. His son shook him and asked what was the matter. Receiving no response, the son arose and lifted his father up, when he discovered that he was dead, having passed away without ii struggle or groan. Mr. Horton was horn in Belton Township, near Shady Grove Baptist Church, on December 2?, 1821. His parents were intensely [lions and highly respected by a wide circle of friends, and the deceased grew up to be a worthy und estimable young man. In 184(1 he was happily married to Miss Harriet Vandiver, and then moved to the Neal's Creek sec tion. Later he lived a short while in Hart well, Ga., and for the last twenty years luis resided iu Pendleton Town ship. He was a magistrate in this County for about twenty years, and served as a commissioner to the poor for several terms preceding the war. He had been a devoted member of the Baptist Church for more than fifty years, and was a great Bible student, having vend it through about twice a year for many years. He was a most exemplary Christian, a devoted hus band, an affectionate father and a most estimable citizen. He always loved to jive advice to and admonish those that needed it and to speak words of com fort to the distressed. The deceased was the father of five sons and one daughter. The sons survive him, and his wife preceded him to the grave iibout four years ago. Last Friday the remains were interred beside those of his wife in the old Vandiver graveyard, near Neal's Creek Church, the funeral services being conducted by Rev. Mike McGee, in thc presence of a large con gregation of friends and relatives. Ashli ry Items.
