Burros: We, through u second pur ty. were invited to a corn shucking on No vember 1st. We received our invitation after sun-set, but we got our horse and buggy ready in a few minutes and shirted, the distance being over seven miles. lu due time we reached the residence of Mr. A. C. Wardlaw, of Uroadaway township. On our arrival we found his corn all shuck ed, and his neighbors eating their supper. When we learned this we felt bad until wo reached our old friend, wdio gave us such a cordial greeting all gloom wus at once dissi pated, and we were ushered into the dining room and set down to a table burdened with good and substantial food. Wc wcro moderate, but our friends, W. and G., were immoderate upon the repast of our lord, the proprietor. It turn?! out that tho shucking was a day-time, and not au old fashioned nightshucking. Eighteen hands, ull good neighbors, had chucked and cribb ed 620 bushels of corn, as we made it, by measuring the crib. All this corn and si*r bales of cotton, all ginned, baled and lying in the yard, was made with one mule, and that mule was plowed by Mr. Wnrdlaw. This was his individual crop. His tenants' crops are etina!ly as good, and are yet to be divided. Ordinarily I would not have said a word, but for a dry year who can beat it ? We were presented with a pumpkin weighing over forty pounds for Mrs. M., and will keep it for the Baptist Convention. M. "Tlici Oath Ituvorcntlal." An oath, if it ever have value. Mr. Local, has it when used to strengthen an assertion doubtful in itself, or made so hy the char acter of the speaker. It should, therefore, have some point, some relevancy to tho subject matter, and not be, ns it generally is, a pointless, almost inarticulate express ion, Idly used with no earthly significance. No one defends the morality of thc practice of profane swearing. "It's n bad habit, but I can't help it," says one. "I don't mean anything by it," says another. For these, tho regretfully hut habitually profuue, the f ?llowing thoughts are offered : In swear, ing, as in other duties, let every man stick to his trade and swear in the terms and by the implements of bis calling. See the vost mine upon which professional men may dra w. How suggestive the oath, "By the Shade of Story !" or "By the Powers of Fi. Fu. !" "By the Scab bf Vernier !" Law yers, Doctors, Professors, only think what good you may do hy judicious and well regulated oaths. And so through all the walks of life, lot the oath proclaim tho calling of the man und his faith therein. Let clerks swear by their employers, and thus by the frequency and potency of their oaths will thc status of their friends be firmly impressed on the minds of other?. Thc field is I JO wide for me, Mr. Loca). Apply your wit and wisdom to it. One oath I do recall, wrung from a ten der heart by the approaching death of one much lovetl, which carries willi it the weight und solemnity of a prayer : "He will die !" quoth Corporal Trim. "By Ood, he shull not die !" said my undo Toby. The accusing spirit that flew to Heaven's chancery with the oath blushed os she gave it in, und the Recording Angel, as he wrote it down, dropped a tear upon the word and blotted it out forever." All honor to such an oath, Mr. Local, but in my judgment "Damns have had their day." BOB A CRES. Smoke the S. it N. Cigur. For sale by Moss it Catlett, nt McCul.j*s Corner.
