SOUTH CAROLINA NEWS. ? Ralph lv. Carson, one of the leading: lawyers of the state, died at his home in Spartanburg, Tuesday, aged 70 years. < ? Bishopvil'.e, March 21: Seme 330 or 400 men and women gathered at the courthouse here Sunday afternoon for a louf on the purpose 01 organizing u, .?? forcement league. This meeting was the outgrowth of the meeting held last week by the women of Bishopville, at which time an active campaign was launched to suppress the sale of liquor and alcoholic drugs in Bishopvillo and Bee county. The meeting Sunday was presided over by Thomas 6. McLeod, and the obejct of the meeting was explained by Mrs. M. P. Harris. The chairman called upon each of the ministers of the town and also several citizens. Much satisfaction was expressed by the speakers at the large gathering which plainly demonstrated that the citizenship of Lee county is opposed to law violations, and that they mean to cooperate with tho officers of the law in*their effort to put the bootlegger out of business. A res olution offered by D. A. Quattlebaum to the effect that a law enforcement league be organized was adopted. Mr. McLeod was chosen as the chairman, with the request that he appoint the <- necessary committees and arrange for 0 further meetings in the future. ?The United States supreme court has dismissed for want of jurisdiction the appeal of Carlos Corbitt, who is alleged to have shot and kifled Jule Cooper, Hugh Fanning and one other man in Orangeburg county, from the decision of the supreme court of. South Carolina that it was not a violation of his constitutional rights to try him on a separate indictment tor killing another of the three men after he had been acquitted of killing one of them. When the state undertook to try Corbitt, in the second case, his counsel interposed the plea that as all three men were killed by Corbitt at the same time as fast as his pistol would lire and as a result of the same impulse of self-defense, the whole affair was really one act In law, and that ' T,nt fnr. Tile SlUlt* was Uliun umi..b IV , bitt's life twice in jeopardy for the same offense. The state demurred to this plea and *the circuit court overruled the demurrer. The state supreme court, which reversed the circuit court, ordered the case to trial, hut Chief Justice Gary allowed a writ of error to the United States supreme court. Counsel for the state included A. J. Hydnck, Adam H. Moss, T. M. ysor, Charles A. Douglas and others, while counsel for Corhitt were Cole L. Blease, \V. C. Wolfe, M. L. Smith and others. ? Spartanburg, March 22: The Herald of today has the following: The dance at the Cleveland hotel last night advertised an "Exposition" dance was attended by nearly one hundred young men of the city and not over four young ladies. Considerable interest was manifested in this event, and late in the night there were telephone call3 to The Herald office, asking for news on the subject by persons interested in the question whether or not the young ladies of the city were out in large numbers. George L. Reid, manager of the Metropolitan Orchestra company, who furnished the music for this dance, announced last night that there would be no further dances this week at the hotel. Mr. Reid, whose company has been here several days, only arrived in the cit^ last evening. He is a member of the Columbia chamber of c6mmerce. Mr. Reid stated that his reason for calling off the remaining two dances advertised was due to the fact that he had no desire whatever to create any situation in Spartanburg that would cause dissension or friction or misunderstanding. Of course he was not familiar with local conditions here, and rather than subject any of the young ladies who would attend the dances to criticism. deemed it the best plan to call a halt to all subsequent proceedings. TUB AVERAGE MAN can hardly sleep if he remembers that his buildings, stock of goods, or other property that fire could destroy is not adequately covered by fire insurance which may POSSIBLY burn, but he ctin and does sleep like a log, or rather like a dead man, when lie knows that his life is inadequately insured or not insured at all. and if he thinks at all he knows that lie is SLTKE TO DIE, and that when he does the mortgage on his home is sure to be foreclosed and his wife and helpless children turned out to face the world, or if there is no mortgage that they will be deprived of many comforts and privileges that he takes pride in supplying while with them.
