Bowman, of Orangeburg, who presided over the February term of the court of common pleas here this week and who, by the way, mad? many friends among people connected with the court because of his kindness and consideration is quite a stickler for form. He ordered a jury to return a verdict in a cas? heard Wednesday morning and after the foreman had signed the verdict, the attorney for the plaintiff in whose favor the verdict was awarded either forgot or was a little slow about handing the jury foreman the customary dollar. The judge noticed the fact and addressing counsel he said: "All right sir, you are not quite through with that jury." Manlius Owens of Rock Hill, is held for the April term of the court of general sessions under $500 bond for attempting to shoot Policeman S. M. Williford in Rock Hill Wednesday morning. The difficulty between Owens and the officer occurred on Main street about 9 o'clock as Mr. Williford was going down town. Owens cried to him to stop and -crossing the srteet, accused him of making a false statement. Williford denied the accusation telling Owens that the shoe was upon the other foot. Owens then snatched out his pistol and fired afterward running into Record Alley. As soon as he could draw his pistol from under his rain coat Officer Williford returned the fire. Owens was arrested a few moments later by Constable Frank Allen. While Williford was not hit a bullet from Owen's pistol'passed through his clothes. Where Was Jackson Bprn? The old controversy over whether Andrew Jack?on, the idol of Democracy, was born in. South Carolina or North Carolina is to be fought over in the house next Monday. Representative William F. Stevenson, of South Carolina, yesterday arranged, to speak on the subject on that day and gave notice to Representative William C. Hammer, that it would be up to Mr. Hammer to combat the proof lie will offer, says a Washington dispatch of yesterday. The claim that Old Hickory was born in Union county. North Carolina. Mr. Stevenson claims, is a fallacy. Representative Stevenson himself was imjx ii in in v aii'iuict, in iiru* u county. He went to South Carolina in early manhood. Mr. Stevenson said ho would prove by Mr. .Tuekson's own statement that his birthplace was in South Carolina. Representative Hammer is calling for proof to sustain North Carolina's claim on Jackson, lie said, however, that if South Carolina won out in this contest. Tar Heels would still claim legitimate proprietorship in the great soldier statesman, as the fair daughter of North Carolina, the state of Tennessee, nourished, sustained and developed that great America n. Brian, prop, of gocery, Lincoln St., says: "About two years ago when I was in Greenville, attending court, sitting on the bench for so many hours brought on a mighty severe pain across my back. I got Doan's Kidney Tills and began using them. The next day, my back was well and strong and the pains were all gone. I used to suffer with rheumatic trouble, too. and Doan's Kidney Pills benefited me in that cause, too, relieving the pains in my knees and left leg. Doan's certainly are a splendid remedy."
