the doors against tliem, even though they were avowed anarchists." That is what this amendment would do. Of course we all care for America first but the only way we can prove it is not by words but by votes." Immediately after the house had voted the amendment down, Mr. Sabath, presented another designed to make lawful the entry of Donal J. O'Callaghan, lord mayor of Cork, and permit him to remain as a political refugee. The amendment was in the form of a resolution introduced several days ago by Mr. Sabath but when it was rea'd, a dozen members in all wn ts of the chamber iumned to their feet with cries of "Point"of order." One was sustained and the bill was passed without reference in any of its sections to the lord mayor. Ot MACK AS A PASTOR Tells How He Split a Church as Wide Open as a .'Song Book. The following: is from a sermon by Rev. B. F. McLendon in "Wilmington, where he is now holding a meeting. Eleven years ago I went to Abbeville, S. C., and applied for admission, and the first question that they asked me in the examination was what was the difference between doctrine and dogma? And that question raised me clear out, and I passed the buck and took the count. I don't suppose there has ever been a fellow in the history of the world that, missed it as far as I did: but after much manipulating and | ?: ;?-srv tKflv to Sllf- I Wirepulling lllcjr l'er my presence on a hard scrambled circuit. The presiding elder on my departure for my new field told me it was the toughest, proposition in the conference, and that they had nevej been able to handle the situation. When I arrived I found that it wasn't a preacher they wanted; it was an undertaker they needed. Of all the cold storage, frosty, frigidity, polar bear, embalming fluid, black hearse, grave- ' yard propositions I have ever seen, or ever expect to see, I found it there. j My first service was a funeral sermon and I told, some beautiful little pathetic stories, and we all put on tiie sob stuff, and shed copious crocodile tears, and the next morning they ran down the road to the presiding elder telling him that they had at last found the preacher that they had been looking for. Remember there was not a single solitary human being in that church that professed religion and no one ever thought of accusing them of having it. All that week I was loading my gain and preparing for the coming conflict, and. on Sunday I turned loose on that bunch and they began to duck and the feathers began to fly. There was one old bell wether that believed strictly in the minority rule, and the preacher had to walk like he said walk, and talk like he said talk, and come when ho said come, and go when he said go. j They called him Cousin Samuel, and lie sure was czar, king and dictator in that community. When I opened up in hign gear?I can see Cousin Samuel now. He wiggled and twisted and squirmed like he had a hornet in his clothes. His discomfiture and distress was so perceptible that it was heartrending. Up to that time Cousin Sammie would pout for a week, if he didn't raise all the hymns and of course he persistently insisted that would, be the order without deviations or reservalions, and his old voice was a cross between a cane mill, goose cackling, fiddle playing and a jackass braying. As a result of my labors I split that little church just as wide open as a song- book, and really got them converted.
