tumorous flrpartmcnt Ole Mis'sip.?He boarded the train at Yazoo, Mississippi, with a lowerberth ticket for St. Louis. The porter put him in his section, and he sat stock still for a few minutes and stared suspiciously at his surroundings. The first words he spoke were to the porter, about seven o'clock. "When kin I turn in " he asked. While the porter was making up the berth the old man stood swaying In the aisle, catching at seat ends with one hand and clutching his little black valise with the other. When the berth was ready he looked speculatively up and down the aisle, and then, after fidgeting round, abruptly departed from the car. In about five minutes he poked his head in at the vestibule door and yelled: "Look out. ev'ybody! Here comes Ole Mis'sip'!' And come he did! He was in. his nightgown, a voluminous white garment that fell an inch or so below his knees, and his scrawny shanks and feet were bare. As he rushed up the aisle, his clothes on his arms and his shoes and valise in his hands, ladies gasped and retired behind newspapers. He threw his clothes and shoes Into the berth and dived head first after them, drawing the curtains to with a violent yank. In a second the curtains parted just far enough to allow a tufted chin and part of a lanky" jawed face to protrude. "Ole Mis'sip mebby is a leetle mite slow on these here newfangled shebangs," he chuckled, "but he gits thar jist the same!" Ole Mis'sip had undressed on the vestibule platform. Weren't Losing, Anyway.?Last summmer a party of friends were on ft walking tour through the mountains of North Carolina. One day they were anxious to reach Eagle Nest by sunset, but were not certain about the distance to be traveled. Meeting a native they Inquired. "Five miles," was the reply. After walking about six miles farther they ran across another native and put the same question to him. "Five miles," he replied. They went on about eight miles, then met still another inhabitant of the mountains. "How much farther do we have to go to get to Eagle Nest?" inquired one corpulent member of the party. 'Five miles," came back to him again with a dull thud. The fat man sat down and, fanning himself vigorously with his straw hat, said: "Thank goodness, boys, we are still holding our own." 9 ^ ^ A Poor Shot.?A southern gentleman AA /% Kio aM nnorn aort'Qr?t "finmho. I do not want a wild turkey for Christmas this year. Here is three dollars. I want you to buy me a barnyard turkey?the finest you can get." At the sight of the money Sambo nodded and grinned delightedly. Christmas day came. The family and g-uests were seated round the table, praising the size and delicious flavor of the turkey, when suddenly the host exclaimed: "Sambo! What a miserable piece of deception; Didn't I tell you that I did not want a wild turkey? Here I have my mouth full of shot!* Sambo replied cheerfully: "Sho\ dat am a tame turkey. Dat shot was intended fo' me.' A Line of Talk.?Two telephone girls in different country exchanges were having a chat over the wires on the subject of dress. For fifteen or twenty minutes they discussed the topic, from ruches to furbelows, and they were in the midst of accordion plaits when a strident, impatient, imperative masculine voice broke up the symposium. "Ten-four-nine-two," the voice yelled. "Are you there, Sam? Ah, at last! A "Helpful Hint."?Aunt Martha was frequently praised for her culinary skill. On one occasion, when a number of guests had dined with the family, remark was made concerning the beautiful appearance of Aunt Martha's pie, which had a pretty scallop on the edge. Discussion arose as to how the cook managed to maintain such an eve* design on every pie, and Martha was summoned to the dining room and the question duly put to her. The emotions of the guests may be imagined when she replied: "Oh, dat's easy. Ah jes' uses mah false teeth." The Hand of Providence.?The minister had pleaded with his congregation for money to repair the church, which was much the worse for wear. But the offerings were few and far between, while the richest member of the flock dozed behind the stove. A piece of plaster became loosened from the ceiling and dropped with a thud upon the sleeping and unresponsive gentleman. Awakening with a start, and looking up at the hole in the ceiling, he called out: "I will contribute fifty dollars." With uplifted hands the pastor prayed: "O Lord, hit him again" C. O. D.?Mrs. Chandler went into a shop to purchase some handsome water glasses. Not having the money with her to pay for them she gave her address and instructed the salesman to mark the glasses C. O. D. The salesman made a note of the request and later the glasses were de livered, but no request was made for payment. Mrs. Chandler unpacked the parcel and found that each glass had been beautifully engraved with the letters "C. O. D." placed very prominently upon them. ' EVERY intelligent property ownei understands that a building that woulc have cost $1,000 to. erect in 1914 would cost from $2,000 to $2,500 in 1919 with a mighty slim chance of getting il erected even at the higher figures, owing to the scarcity of material and labor. It is a fact that many dwellings in this town and all over the country are insured for practically the same amount today as in 1914, and if one ol that kind should he burned the owner | would realize when he undertook to rebuild, that his insurance as compared to the cost of rebuilding amounted to practically nothing. The same condition applies to practically ail other classes of property. What about you, Mister? Are you adequately insured? If you are NOT, don't you think that good business sense would tell you that you should increase your protection? I am in position to furnish you with Gilt Edge Protection and would be pleased to consult with all desiring that kind. SAM M. GRIST Room 203, First National Bank Bldg.
