? Vera Cruz, Mexico, October 27: Gen. Felix Diaz, leader of the recent revolt here and Major Zerate, Col. Antonio Migionl and Lieut Lima, officers under Diaz in his attempt to overthrow the government were today condemned to death by court martial. The court martial, which was presided over by Gen. Davlla, sat in secret session from 2 o'clock Tuesday morning until 4.15 o'clock Sunday morning. The sentence caused a sensation. A frreat crowd, including: relatives and many friends of the accused men, gathered outside the building where the court sat and waited for hours for the findings, notwithstanding a heavy rainstorm. Gen. Beltram extended the execution leaving the prisoner temporar> ily at the disposition of the district court- It is thought probable that Col. Migionl and Lieut. Lima will be shot without much ado. The proceedings of the military court have been criticised generally as being very deficient. Public opinion has been strongly . against a military trial for Gen. Diaz. ^ It is openly asserted that the prisoners had an adequate defense and no Investigations have been made so far as to why the federal troops entered the city with white flags flying and the greeting "long live Diaz." Col. Diaz Ordaz and Capt. Cuesta were among the leaders of the rebellion who escaped. It is thought that they will join the Oaxaca rebels. Gen. Diaz had more than 1,000 men under his banner. 300 of whom were prisoners. Col. Jiminez Castro of the federal forces, who was shot In the leg in the skirmish prior to the taking of Vera Cruz, has been sent to Mexico City for treatment of his wounds. ? Chas. Becker, the convicted New York police lieutenant, gave out the story Sunday that he claimed he wanted to tell on the stand. He said that he had never possessed more than $29,000 at one time, and he claimed that most of this had been inherited by himseir ana wire rrom ainerenv relatives and friends. A part of the money, $7,500, represented savings of his wife and himself. He denied that "Bald Jack" Rose had ever acted as his graft collector; but claimed that he had used Rose as a stool pigeon to get information about gamblers. He denied that he had ever been in partnership with Rosenthal; but claimed that Rosenthal had long had a reputation for getting policemen in trouble and that he was too wise to have anything to do with him even if he had been inclined 'o take graft. He said he did not expect sympathy and did not ask it; but he wanted the public to know that he was not as black as he had been painted. The Information is that all the members of the Jury who convicted Becker have been threatened with death; that Judge Goff, who is to pronounce sentence tomorrow is under guard as is also District Attorney that Mr MoTntvre. W IllllUClIt uiiu v**wv , Becker's counsel Is going about armed because of threats against his life. Special $otires. AT THE CHURCHES. PRESBYTERIAN. Prayer meeting Thursday evening at 7.30 o'clock. While it is true that there are still many people who buy Life Insurance from an agent instead of a Company, and who sometimes find that the agent, either through ignorance or intentionally led them to believe that his company and the contracts (policies) were among the best. There are thousands of others, and their tribe is increasing daily, who are Influenced almost entirely by the company and its reputation FIRST and the contract next. They look and then leap, while the other class leaps and then looks, and as a result, often concludes that had it looked before leaping it would not have leaped. No company has an all-round reputation for squarer dealing with every policy holder and of writing liberal policies as has the Mutual Benefit Life Insurance Company, of Newark, N. J. No company is stronger. Look Before You Leap! Test my assertions. If you are not entirely satisfied that they are true you are under no obligations to buy. SAM. M. GRIST, Special Agent.
