ABOUT ALFALFA. Hon. J. 8. Glasscock Gives Some Information That le Interesting. Editor Yorkville Enquirer: In reply to your call for Information about alfalfa I beg leave to report that I have one and a half acres; but I cannot say that it is anything to boast about, however much it may come out later on. I sowed ray alfalfa last fall on land; that had been in course of preparation ' for about two years, and although it; has come up to a kind of a stand, it is not what I would like to see. Except for the experience of others who have gone ahead of me, I would be discour HSfOU I DUI ?18 II 18 i aiTl 8(111 UU|nriui. Mr. Alec Wllllford has a patch that is about two years old and it is coming alone beautifully except in a few s:K>ts, some of them not over five feet square. The patch generally shows a growth of from six to ten inches, and the poor spots show a sickly yellow growth, not over two inches high. Mr. Williford is feeling pretty good over it and he is still working. He remembers that it took three years to get the alfalfa well established on the Winthrop college farm, and he sees that when he gets the proper remedy applied to the poor spots here, inoculation, no doubt, he will have a patch to be proud of. I am still working along the theory that lack of inoculation is the trouble \ with my patch. -T P\ Tteld. J. A. Black and several others up around Rock Hill have Ave acres of alfalfa, and all are growing enthusiastic. J. W. Roddey is advocating the idea of sowing alfalfa seed along with the small grain during several years, as the best way of securing inoculation. I got a good stand of vetch on a patch of land that way, and I have had the same experience with crimson clover. I want to commend The Enquirer for the interest it has always taken in agriculture. It has made many suggestions that help to make people think along better and more progressive lines, and in telling what some farmers are doing it helps others. It is my opinion that if York county can make a success of alfalfa, and from what I have seen, I am Inclined to think she can, it will be a great thing for her financially and otherwise. Respectfully, J. S. Glasscock. Catawba, April" 8. 1912. ALFALFA GROWERS. Bunch of Rock Hill Farm or* Who Think Wall of the Crop. Editor of The Torkvllle Enquirer: In response to your request for the names of farmers In the county who are sowing and experimenting withal* falfa, I send you the following list: > State Farm. Carhartt Farm, J. M. Cherry. W. C. Whitner, W. C. Bigger, Jas. Stewart, J. A. Black, B. H. Matthews, Rock Hill. My Informant, Mr. S. F. Seagle, manager of the Stewart farm, says they started three years ago with one acre, and had increased to seven acres last year, during which they cut about thirty loads of most excellent hay, notwithstanding the drought. They will sow three acres more this fall. Mr. Seagle says he has talked with most of the parties mentioned above, and all seem to be satisfied with results. Very truly, R. R. Allison. Tirzah, April 8. Aliens Still At Largs.?Notmng aennite has been heard from Sidna Allen or Wesley Edwards for several days. 1 Governor Mann of Virginia, last week issued a proclamation proscribing all who should In any way harbor or aid the fugitives, and two of Allen's kinsmen have been arrested on the strength of this proclamation.
