NOT THE ARMY WORM. James Henry Rice Says the Pest Is the Leaf Caterpillar. That the pest now doing great damage to South Carolina cotton is not the feared "army worm." as is generally believed, but the cotton leaf caterpillar (argillacea Alabama), is the statement made yesterday by James Henry Rice. Jr., state game warden, and an authority on the fauna of South Carolina. Mr. Rice explains that the cotton leaf cater -pillar has for years extracted its toll from the cotton fields of America and uses the devastation at this time as a hint to the people of the necessity of preserving the insect-eating birds of the state. Mr. Rice's letter to the State is as follows: "The caterpillar now damaging cotton in the state is not heliophila unipuncta (the army worm) but the cotton leaf caterpillar (argillacea Al abama), a pest that nas taaen iun ui cotton ever since it was planted in America, the damage running from $15,000,000 to $50,000,000 a year, and even higher in exceptional years. "They are very different insects, although moths are the parents of both. "In the first place, the army worm belongs to the same family as the boll worm (heliothis obsoleta) and the common cutworm (Ypsllon agrotis). They live in low, wet places and certain years when they become too numerous they are forced to migrate in search of food. It is then they become a menace. A line of army worms crossed South Carolina in 1852, causing widespread damage; a mammoth host swung across Alabama in 1881, which was forty-four miles in length. This latter was stopped by being parasitized by the tiny Chalcis fly, the flies shooting eggs into the bodies of the caterpillar and the eggs hatching in two days a maggot that destroys the caterpillar. Something similar happened on the sea islands two years ago. "The cotton leaf caterpillar is grayish, with tiny hairs over the body; dark stripes run along the sides. The moth is brownish, sometimes whiteish, and there are roundly about 1,000 eggs to the female, with from two or three generations annually. They sometimes migrate in vast swarms. "Nighthawks or bullbats eat quantities of these moths in the late evenings. as do whipporwills, screechowls and chuckwllls-widows at night. It is not uncommon to find more than fifty of these moths in a nighthawk's atomnr>h?all of which are females. from which one can form a vivid Idea of the value of the nighthawk. "Robins eat quantities of the puplds In winter, tearing open the cases to get at them. "The present outbreak of the cotton leaf caterpillar Is one of the many Instances, to which I called attention last winter before a committee of the general assembly, warning them that before the boll weevil arrived there would be Insect outbreaks that would jar the teeth In their heads. "They will remember that whether they are prepared to own It or not. and for the present that much Is suffl-1 clent."?Columbia State. ?Gaffney. October 7: At a rousing meeting of the farmers of Cherokee county held here today resolutions were unanimously adopted by the Farmers' union to hold cotton. United States Senator E. D. Smith made an enthusiastic speech. Three men were appointed from each township to secure the co-operation of every farmer In holding cotton. AT THE CHURCHES. PRESBYTERIAN. Once there was a farmer who. after the early frosts had fallen and changed the beautiful green grass to a golden yellow and equally beautiful but less nutritious?conceived the brilliant idea of placing green glasses over the eyes of his cattle in order to delude them into the belief that they were grazing in green pastures. And as it was a ease of "where ignorance was bliss" they gleaned the fields quite bare and knew not the difference till this day. Moral: We have Just received a lot of GREEN Coffee. There is no deception about this Coffee. Quite a lot of people prefer green Coffee. They like to buy it green and parch it brown. Can't you smell it now? Oh. wasn't the aroma delicious? To all who desire to again quaff a cup of hot, golden, stimulating Coffee? Coffee, what is Coffee, come and try our green Coffee and be pleased. HERNDON & GORDON. f AUCTION SALES. I know that the Appier Outs I offer are a little higher than lots of other so-called Appier Oats, but the difference is that all "Appier" Oats are not Pure Appier Oats. Most "Appier" Oats are mixed; some more, [ some less. And if they are mixed they are not Pure. The Appier Oats I i offer are grown in this state; they I are threshed and screened by the man who grows them, and they can not be mixed, because he grows nothing but Appier Oats and doesn't thresh any oats except his own.
