county, Messrs. Wertz and Williams. ? Columbia, June 22: The talk in educational circles is the wholesale changes In the list of public school text books made by the state board of education at its Thursday night meeting. Well informed educators estimate that the action of the board means an 80 per cent change in the present list, if not a larger percentage. Expressed in money terms, this Is a tax on the people of the state of very nearly a half million dollars. Mr. Swearingen. in protesting against the action of the board, is said to have "Ttta-ed to the members that should Winthrop college be wiped out by Are the loss would not be greater to the people than the cost which the wholesale change of text books Involves. Mr. Swearingen. whose dissent from the policy of the board, of which he is the ex-offlcio secretary, became known Thursday night, was asked today for a statement of his position in the matter. He replied that he expects. as soon as possible, to prepare a statement, setting forth fully his position, but on account of the routine work devolved on his office by iho Krtrtlr iwlnntinn he has not vet had time to do so. He said enough, however. to indicate that while he does not desire to appear in the role of a kicker he realizes that the superintendent of education is generally regarded as the responsible head of the educational system and that he proposes to let it be known that the sweeping changes were not all made with his approval. The book adoption will continue in effect for five years and the total value of the books sold under the adoption now in force amounts to about $500,000. In the recent adoption the American Book company secures the largest share of the business. The most important changes made, as pointed elsewhere, is In the arithmetics and geographies. Wentworth's arithmetic was supplanted by Milne's and Frye's geography by Maury's, both the winners being published by the American Book company. NEELY'S CREEK NOTES. Corrrftpondtncp Th? YorkvllJe Enquirer Lesslie. June 26.?The cotton crop in this section of Catawba township is in remarkably good condition and well advanced, considering the long continued drought. On sandy lands, and especially within the radius of perhaps a mile and a half of Neely's Creek church, the crop is unusually fine. The stands are good and the weed Is from half a leg to knee high, except in the "red spots," and in these the stands are poor and the weed very small. Last year the farmers in the radius mentioned above, were badly damaged on account of too much rain but this year they seem to be pretty well suited In weatner conaiuuns although good rains would be very acceptable and are badly needed. The corn prospects are poor because of lack of moisture and even If an abundance of rain would come now, the corn production would not be near what it would have been if there had been plenty of moisture two or three weeks ago. However, the farmers of this vicinity are not especially discouraged over prospects and are very hopeful that they will be blessed with good rains within the next few days and thus save the corn crops from complete failure. There have been local showers almost every day for the past week, but these have been scattered, covering but small areas, and of short duration, in most cases hardly more than wetting the top crust. There was sufficient rain Saturday afternoon to cause the water to stand in the cotton rows, but nothing like a sufficiency. Those of our farmers who had fall oats sowed, and the majority of them did. In more or less quantity, got very satisfactory returns. There has been some peas sowed on stubbles and these appear to be coming to a fair stand. The fruit crop has been almost a failure, only a few having peaches. . The blackberry crop is fairly good In low places and along the branches, but the berries are quite small. - Rev. R. M. Stevenson, D. D., of Clover, filled the Neely's Creek pulpit yesterday, and preached a strong sermon to a fair-sized congregation. The doctor's subject was "The Danger of Little Sin9." and based his remarks on the 15th verse of the second chapter of Solomon's Songs: "Take us the foxes, the little foxes, that spoil the vines; for our vines have tender grapes." He especially pointed out the proneness of human nature to belittle the little sins that we commit; sins that we excuse by saying that they don't count, but which In reality are but the seeds of greater sins that will come in easy sequence as we indulge in the small sins that look so insignificant in themselves. To illustrate he reminded his hearers that in every day life people are being continually judged by the smallest traits of character, traits that we ourselves would not consider of any importance but to our neighbors and the world at large they give a full and complete index to our life and character. He emphasized the importance of the little things in our lives and characters, and especially warned his hearers to guard against the little sins that are considered too insignificant to notice. Rev. Chas. B. Betts has been spending several days visiting relatives and friends in this neighborhood. He expects to leave tomorrow for Columbia. Tenn., where he will begin his pastoral work. "Charlie" is universally popular with the people of the Xeely's Creek congregation, and all of his numerous friends will watch his work with particular interest. AT THE CHURCHES. BAPTIST. Strange >4$ It May Appear Notwithstanding the fact that It has been thoroughly demonstrated by grueling investigations and otherwise during the past few years "that all life insurance companies are not about the same," still there are individuals here and there who still pretend to believe that "they are about the same." It is not my purpose to try to argue with that class, for the reason that life Is too short. I have no fault to find with the Individual who for any reason, prefers to carry his Insurance in a company that cannot point to a clean record from every standpoint covering its entire existence for a period of 50 years or more, and does not guarantee as much, aside from its record, as does the Mutual Benefit, because of the fact that he pays the freight and has the right to choose his route. ? There is no reason to doubt the fact that any man who will make an Intelligent and impartial investigation of the Mutual Benefit's contracts, its record, etc., cannot be induced to accept a policy in any other company. There is really a big difference in companies, even among the best, and as you, of course, really want to buy the best, you will do well to let me show you what the Mutual Benefit will do for you.
