CLOVER CULLINGS. In the New School Building?A Hog That Weighs Nearly 700 Pounds? Farmers In Good Shape? The Town Is Developing. Correspondence The Yorkvllle Enquirer Clover, November 25.?The new school building has been occupied for more than a week and the teachers ' and pupils are now in position to do much more satisfactory work thar A-as ( possible under former conditions. The enrollment is about 175 at this time? the largest in the history of the school. Clover has quite a number of citizens who are remarkably successful as hog raisers, but it is believed that Mr. J. A. Clinton is generally conceded to be the champion this year. He has a hog that is about one-year-old that he bought from Mr. D. M. Hall on the first Monday in last March and on that day it weighed 125 pounds. It is variously estimated that it will now weigh from six to seven hundred pounds net V when killed. Scores of people have , visited the pen in which the monster is kept and the majority state that it is \the largest pig they have even seen. The majority of the farmers in this 1 \ section have been selling their cotton ' as ranidlv as ginned and it is easily 1 possible that there is less cotton and ^ more corn and money in the hands of the farmers within a radius of six or 1 eight miles of Clover than has been the case at this season in years, if ever, and a larger acreage of wheat and oats has been sown. Messrs. J. M. and Ben C. Adams of the Bowling Green neighborhood, re- . 4 cently bought that part of Mr. S. M. Faries property on Main street that embraced the store room and livery i stable and have commenced the erec- ' tion of a handsome two story dwelling on their lot between the store and the Faries dwelling, the latter having been bought by Mr. John L. Stacy. r The Clover Cotton Oil and Ginning company has ginned almost 2,000 bales j of cotton so far this season and the outlook is that the oil output will be . almost twice as great as that of last season. Rev. J. H. Smith of Charlotte, is as sisting Dr. R. M. Stevenson in a protracted meeting at Bethany this week, the services having commenced on last Sunday. Mr. Smith is an attractive, forceful and eloquent speaker and the ' services are being largely attended and i * much interest manifested. It is probable that the meeting will be continued until Monday. The town council has recently opens' ed up a new street from King's Mountain street, beginning at a point between the A. R. P. church and the res^ idence of Dr. E. W. Pressly and run^ ning in front of the new school building and intersecting the road near the old Smith homestead. It is the intention to open one or more streets in this part of town at an early date in order to render the school more accessible from every part of town. HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETICS. ^ Conditions Seem Favorable For a w' Strong County Organization. r Editor of The Enquirer: In our county we have at least eight excellent high schools which are well abreast of the times and have a very large enrollment of as fine boys and 0. girls as are to be found anywhere. The present idea of education is not only to teach pupils, but to lead or draw them out and make them develop themselves. If we shall set apart a day during the session for athletic contests and in the evening have contests in declamation, etc., it will result in untold benefit to the schools and pupils of the county. A suitable day and place of meeting can be selected several weeks in advance. These annual contests between he schools of the county will have a great influence on every boy and girl I in each school taking part as well as I ^ on the pupils, who are so fortunate as I X to represent their schools. To lead a j boy to take pride in his physique will soon cause him to strive likewise to " develop his mind. Then you have awakened the boy's latent ambition, 1 and this, as all teachers well know, j is all that is necessary to insure the ' future of that boy. The teachers and j pupils can agree on some day and ' make rules as to how many representatives shall be allowed each school I and prescribe all the other conditions of the physical and mental contests. I These contests will keep pupils in school and will keep them in our high j schools longer by giving them these things for which they so long to go to j college. They will make teachers and * pupils take more interest in all phases j # of their school work and cause them to love their schools and consequently j their homes better. This bringing our high schools in such close touch, will j enable them to exchange ideas which will be very beneficial. I believe that j this feature and all the good results 1 ^ that will consequently accrue from it . ^ will be all that the high schools of our I county need to make them rank with . the best high schools of this and other i states. I shall be delighted to see this , matter discussed in The Rnquirer, from I the standpoint of all parties?the pupil, the teacher, and the parent. i J. Harvey Witherspoon.
