MR. BRYAN A BOLTER. Will Not Support Candidate For Governor Because He Is For Liquor. In a statement in which he declare." thut the crusade which he feels impelled to wage against the liquor interests of the state and nation overshadows a personal and politica friendship of twenty years, says a Lincoln. Neb., dispatch of Tuesday William J. Bryan this evening announced that lie had bolted the heat of the Democratic state ticket in Nebraska and would not support James C. Dahlman for governor. .Mr. Bryar says he regrets that he is compelled to take the stand he does?his tlrsl departure from political regularity? but says he feels it his duty to do sc because of the position taken by tht Democratic nominee on the liquor question. The statement, which is, in a way, in an apologetic tone, does not indicate that Mr. Bryan will support thf candidate of any other party, but announces that he is a prejudiced advocate of county option and the early closing saloon law, both of which ht says are menaced by Mr. Dahlman's candidacy. The statement is as follows: "I am just leaving for Missouri and shall be absent practically all of thf time for about a month campaigning in Missouri, Iowa, Indiana and Illinois After that I shall be at liberty tc speak for Mr. Hitchcock, the Democratic candidate for congress, and for the state ticket in Nebraska. "I regret speaking for the state ticket, however, I shall not be able to present any arguments in favor of the election of Mr. Dahlman. His position on the liquor question makes that impossible. I regret this exceedingly, for he has been a political and personal friend for twenty years and it would give me pleasure to speak for him if I could Indorse the policy for which he stands, but he has chosen tc make the liquor question the paramount issue and makes his appeal or that issue. "In spite of the fact that the last Democratic state convention voted down a declaration against county option by a vote of 638 to 202, he says that he will veto a county option bill if passed, and in spite of the fact that the state convention indorsed the 8 o'clock closing law by a vote of 710 to 163 he announces that he will sign a bill repealing it if such a bill is passed. He is making his appeal on non-partisan lines with the liquor question as the sole issue. His courage is to be commended. It is an honest way of making a campaign although it compels him to separate himself from friends who do not agree with him and to rely for sunport ( mainly upon those Democrats and Republicans who take his view of the subject. "Possibly it is just as well to have the issue clearly presented so that it may be settled tnis year inaieuu i?i two years hence. Troublesome as the question is now. it would be even more embarrassing if present in 1912, when we have a presidential election on hand. If Mr. Dahlman is elected it will be a declaration by the voters of the state aerainst county option and against the 8 o'clock closing law. If he is defeated it will be a declaration in favor of county option and in favor of 8 o'clock closing law. In other words the voters now have an opportunity to decide whether the state shall go backward or forward on the liquor question. To present arguments in favor of going backward would not only contradict what I have already said on the subject, but would embarrass me in the fight that I expect to make nereafter to save our party from the odium of being the representative of the liquor interests." The Real Business.?The state of South Carolina has been forced to borrow more than a half million dollars already this year in order to meet the continually increasing appropriations of the general assembly. Suppose we stop discussing the whisky question a while and try to devise ways and means of reducing expenses of the government as well as securing equitable returns of property ror taxation. These are the most vital issues before the taxpayers just now.?Bamberg I Herald. AT THE CHURCHES. METHODIST. Rev. J. H. Thacker, Pastor.
