Yorkvllle, Feb. 8.?Cotton 14J. j New York Cotton. New York, Feb. 7.?Spot cotton closed quiet, 10 points higher; middling uplands 15.20; middling gulf 15.45; sales 300. Futures opened steady and closed firm as follows: Feb. 14.95; . March 14.96; April 14.94; May 15.05; June 14.96; July 14.95; Aug. 14.38; Sept. 13.42; Oct. 12.96; Nov. 12.84; Dec. 12.79. New York, Feb. 7.?An opening ad- j vance in the cotton market was fol- j lowed by a reaction during the middle ? of the day which appeared the result | of weakness in stocks, but continued 2 evidence of an increasing trade de- } mand caused a sharp recovery in the 1 late trading when most of the active months sold at the highest point of the day and movement. The close was firm at a net advance of 6 to 9 I points, old crop positions being rela- * tively the stronger. The market opened steady at an advance of 7 to 13 points and sold about 9 to 17 points net higher during the first few minutes in response to the firm showing of the Liverpool cables, large English spot sales, the improved spot business reported in the leading southern markets on Saturday and a renewal of bull support. The advance was soon cnecaea, nuwever, by realizing and Wall street selling which was attributed to the unsettling influence on sentiment of the stock market situation. As prices eased off local professionals took the short side and during the middle of the day May contracts sold off from 15.05, the high point of the morning to 14.89 or within a point of Saturday's close, while other positions sold off in, or a little under the final figures of last week. But there was no great amount of liquidation, apparently a good part of the Wall street selling being attributed to shorts, and the market in the late trading became very firm on reports coming via New Orleans to the effect that Liverpool spot sales after hours aggregated 30,000 bales. Private cables received in the New York market reported no knowledge of these sales but there was a reversal of position on the part 1 of early sellers and May contracts sold up to 15.07 or 19 points for the higher on active buying and a renewal of bull support. The close was within a point or two of the top on the active months. Southern spot markets officially reported were. unchanged to lc higher and good sales were reported in some of the leading markets.
