Charlotte Observer: The upheaval in Constantinople resulting in a scene tot bloodshed that is destined to become historical, and the taking prisoner of Abdul Hamid, serve to call attention to the career of this ruler of the empire. The sultan is not an old man, as the "'"lotHi cr.t Koine hut fifi vears old. age V/4 i utvio D vl vv.<o ? ^ He was a product of stormy times and it is but natural that he should so out in a storm. The brother whom he succeeded was deposed on account of insanity, and at the time that Abdul came ^ into power, Turkey was at war with Servia and as an alternative to defeat accepted an armistice, the terms of which were dictated by Russia. The terms were rather hard. Turkey was compelled to part with some of its choicest provinces, the sultan giving up among other possesions, the island of Cyprus. Later, Abdul Hamid had to combat a revolution in eastern Roumelia, and following that was a continuous stream of internal disturbances. It is doubtful if any ruler of modern days nas naa a more strenuous nine than the sultan of Turkey. He was a ^ notorious staver-off of debts and on one occasion the United States had to collect a bill from him through the medium of a gun-boat. Other governments were not so successful even though they threatened him with both ? navy and army. And now the sultan is a captive. What Is to be his fate Is a matter of speculation. It is more than probable, however, that he will be held prisoner as a kind of a diplomatic asset. He may be stowed away in some dungeon to await the convenience of the young Turks, who may find a live sultan more profitable than J a dead one. But whatever may comej ^ lu ptuts, auuui ntumu is an ca. Record For Corn and Cotton.?South Carolina takes the prize for growing crops.
