fence. Both of the other two men were killed accidentally and both so stated before they died, completely exonerating the boy. Reliable evidence will bear out every one of these statements I hope," continued Mr. Ashley "that Greenville county juries will put down secret societies among negroes which exist for the sole purpose of killing and robbing white men. I am going to do all in my power to help to put such organizations out of business." Mr. Ashley declares that when McGaha was shot he was by actual measurement over sixty yards from Perkins' house, making toward his buggy and smoking a cigarette. Mr. Ashley appears to be deeply affected by McGaha's death. He says he raised him from the age of two years, his father having been killed by falling in Jim McCullough's well at Honea Path. The mother gave the boy to Ashley, her cousin. "I loved him like my own .. . ' -> 1 iixT?uio II#a son. ' ne aeciarru. ? mo ms did he give me a word of sass, even when drinking. When sober he was one of the best fellows in the world." Watterson attacks Roosevelt.? In a signed article, Colonel Henry Watterson assails the president's recent exchange of letters with W. J. Bryan, saying: "Only the spleen of a spoiled child, the fury of a bathed and foolish boy, could account for the exhibitions, which, for the moment, are confined to the White House, but which will presently be placed on wheels and trolleyed about from one end of the land to the other." Colonel Watterson says that he desires "to speak with becoming moderation." He says in part: "Is it not true that you were on terms of intimate friendship with the late Matthew Stanley Quay: that you owed to his insistence your appointment as assistant secretary of the navy; even your nomination to the vice presidency; and how can you reconcile this relationship with the character of a good civil service reformer? "How came you to take from the Santa Fe Railway its most able and conspicuous legislative manager, Paul Morton, and to make him a member of your cabinet, and when the Santa Fe rebate suits disclosed this gentleman, why was prosecution suspended until he could resign to take another and a better post? You must have known Mr. Morton's character at least as well as Mr. Bryan knew Governor Haskell's character?if not better. "What did you mean when you said to Mr. Harriman 'you and I are practical men,' and why did you send for him at all. and just what did Mr. James S. Sherman, now Republican candidate for vice president, have to do with that transaction? "To be sure, you have an answer to each of these arraignments, and I do not doubt a plausible answer and maybe a sufficient answer; anyway, an answer satisfactory to your own conscience. I do not doubt, and have never doubted, that you are an upright man. But so is Mr. Bryan an nnright man. Why should you seek to try to make him appear otherwise and Him into a nersonal contro versv ?" AT THE CHURCHES. BAPTIST. Prsver meeting on Wednesday evening at 7.30. METHODIST. L. Oates, Pastor. Fix the Roads. POST OFFICE DEPARTMENT Office of the Fourth Assistant Postmaster General Washington Division of Rural Delivery. The Postmaster, Yorkville, S. C. Sir: The bad condition of roads on route No. ?, recently reported to the department has this day been called to trie attention of the road officials. You will also take the matter up with the local road authorities and patrons residing in the locality of the bad roads, and inform them that the department insists upon roads covered by rural delivery being kept in good condition for travel at all times, and that this matter should receive their immediate attention. If it is found that sufficient interest is not shown in the service to maintain the routes in good condition for travel, they will very likely be amended so as to avoid the neglected roads, or if this cannot be done the discontinuance of the routes will have serious consideration. Failure to comply with this requirement should be reported under section 89, "Instructions", in ample time to admit of consideration of amendments of routes before the beginning of winter. Very respectfully, P. V. DeGraw. Fourth Assistant Postmaster General. OBITUARY. Died?At his home at Sharon on Uctober 2, Mr. A. W.
