i ery respect, having been designed and constructed with a view of making the room strictly sanitary by giving plenty of light and ventilation?an ideal place in which to work. The ceiling Is 22 feet high, and with a large monitor extending almost the full length of the mill and 50 feet wide. No dangerous or unsightly shafting is to be seen, as all drives are from the basement. While speaking of Clover's mills it may not be amiss to mention a few facts regarding the past history of this now large and modern plant. The first mill was organized in 1890 with only about $30,000 capital subscribed. Three thousand spindles were put in, making No. 26s yarn. In 1892 about 2,000 more spindles were added, filling the building and giving 5,000 spindles all told. No further Improvements were made worth mentioning until 1899 and 1900, when Mill No. 2 was constructed and a radical departure made in the quality and style of yarns to be spun, that is fine combed Egyptian yarns, and the first pound of combed yarn ever made south of Philadelphia was spun in this mill. From a little mill of 3,000 spindles in 1890 with a capital of $30,000 Clover's mills now represent an [ outlay of over $400,000 with 21,000 MIMJIab m/1 CO AAA foot nf a pilllllCO auu uotvvv 04 uuiu * ?. floor space. Mill No. 3 was constructed with a view of giving all the help day work and of stopping night work, which will be done shortly. The following presidents have served the company. * Capt. W. B. Smith, Mr. J. R. Barron, Mr. J. W. Neill and Mr. G. 1 L. Riddle, the incumbent. Mr. M. L. Smith has been secretary and treas- , urer from the organization of the company. Mr. Thos. B. Williams is superintendent, having succeeded Mr. W. E. Morton about four years ago, 1 coming here from the Wylie mills ] at Chester. One half of the mill is run on Egyptian cotton and the other t half on long staple. ROCK HILL AND VICINITY. Another Cotton Mill In Contemplation ( ?School Matters?Personal and Oth- 1 er Notes. 1 Correspondence of the Yorkrille Enquirer. Rock Hill, May 9.?Rock Hill is to ' have another cotton mill, which will make seven in all. Property has been purchased on the western suburbs for the purpose, but Just what the capacity and what the output cannot yet be stated. The output, according to ' one of the promoters, is to be some- s thing new in this section though, c Messrs. W. H. Harris, A. P. Ruff and < W. S. Adams are among those inter- 1 ested in the new concern. 3 There is talk of a big tourist hotel J to De erected in tne nonnem enu 01 i the city. Great improvements are be- t ing made up there in the way of ex- t tension of avenues, grading, clearing i and so on. It is hoped and believed that the hotel will materialize. It Is understood that Superintend- " ent of Education Martin is to make a move to secure the 1400,000 presumed to be due by the dispensary to the public schools of the state. If the a schools get the amount coming to it, , 1 the amount the wholesale liquor deal9 ers are claiming will have to be very much reduced. . 1 There were about 4,000 visitors to j the Confederate re-union in Columbia . this week. The old soldiers were de^ llghtfully entertained by the Columbia * people and the committee with food, drink, shelter, speeches and music ' made everybody have a good time. The reunion was one of the most sue- ( cessful that has been held for quite a < number of years. ? R. B. Caldwell, Esq., was on Tues- . day elected mayor of Chester over W. H. Hardin who had held the position for eight years. The vote was 259 to 176. Mr. Hardin has been a * most excellent officer. The voters, s however desired a change, and Mr. J Caldwell, being not only popular, but 1 efficient and thoroughly capable, was ( elected by an overwhelming majority. 1 ? Charles C. Hawkins, a white man, aged about forty-five years, and emf ployed by the Sumter Lumber company, committed suicide a few days ago by placing his head on a railroad 1 iraCK anu prriiuiiniB a uua vcn backed over it. He leaves a widow and two children. Nobody saw him kill himself; but he had shortly before said to some of his fellow operators . that he did not care to live. ' ? The fifth triennial fest of the national Schuetzenbund, was opened in Charleston last Monday at sunrtse with a salute from the German artillery under eommand of Capt. F. W. Wagener. There were thousands of v visitors in the city from all parts of the country. The first number on the ! programme was a great procession, a mile or more in length with numer- t ous bands of music. The procession wound up at the Schuetzenplatz. the pleasure and practice ground of the M home club, and the fest was formerly opened by the firing of three shots by President Roosevelt by means of an electrical connection with the White House. The rifles were aimed on the ground. Two of the shots were bulleyes and the other was very close. The festivities have since been in progress on a tremendous scale, the Germans, and the people of the city generally, having a great time of it. * ? Columbia special of May 7 to News and Courier: Dr. W. J. Murray, chairman of the commission to wind up the state dispensary, was to-day serv- } ed with a summons in a claim made by the internal revenue department for \ over $33,000, claimed by the departl ment to be due by the sub-dispenoorioo nnHor the nlri flianensarv law I for license for the sale of beer. Dr. Murray accepted the summons for the commission, but it Is likely that the commission will contest the claim. The matter has been referred to Attorney General Lyon and the commission's legal adviser, Mr. Stevenson. This claim represents the difference between the amount of retail liquor dealers' license and the amount of . wholesale dealers' license to which it ^ is now asserted, the sub-dispensaries involved were each liable, because of the alleged fact that the dispensaries sold beer in larger quantities than four and seven-eighths gallons. The sum of $5,427 Is claimed to be due for the back licenses for the last flfv teen months and something over $28.000 for the licenses dating back prior to the last fifteen months. ? Columbia. May 7: Preston Lowery, a prominent young farmer of Saluda county, was shot and Instantly killed in his home yesterday by his brother, Lajwton Lowery, who was drinking and who is also a morphine fiend. The scene of the killing is a remote section of the county many miles from a railroad and details are difficult to get. There was no provocation for the crime and no motive, and Lawton Lowery having realized th<> pnormitv of his crime, is reported to have attempted suicide today. He came into his brother's room with a shotgun and told him he was going to kill him. The brother retreated under the bed. As he was coming out, Lawton emptied the full contents into his brother's body, killing him instantly. / AT THE CHURCHES. BAPTIST. rbv. i. o. murray, pastor. Sunday Services?Sunday school 10 a. m. It Is related of the late Senator Hoar that once while riding on a street car In Washington he remarked to a friend that he found great difficulty In living on his income. While the conversation was in progress, the conductor passed through the car collecting the fares. The senator's acquaintance paid his fare with a ticket, while Senator Hoar paid his fare with a nickel. Then his friend said, "I see why you are poor. Everybody is bound to be poor who turns down chances to make twenty per cent on his money. When you pay your car rare in nicneis you get twenty rides for a dollar, but if you bought tickets you would gH twentyfive rides for a dollar. You must be provident If you want to be rich." L. WYLIE, Ph. G. Manager. } CLOVER 8. C. T _ I About the Same. Previous to the year 1905, the expression was common that "all life Insurance companies are about the - same." It was used alike by laymen and agents of practically every company except the Mutual Benefit. The laymen believed it to be true because the agents had told them so. The agents knew It was not, but In order to keep the people fooled they must, when they came in competition with the Mutual Benefit, make the assertion in order to keep the prospect from looklnr before he leaDed. Since the Armstrong Committee lifted the lid in New York In 1906 the laymen have learned that "all life companies are not about the same" and that the Mutual Benefit Is the only one that could and did stand every test that could be applied, and prove by Its record that It was In a class by Itself and did and had always given each and every member a square deal under all circumstances. No better proof of these assertions. It seems, could be offered ' than the fact that In 1906 Its agents wrote more business than during any year of the 62 It had been In business, while almost all of the "Just about the same" companies wrote from 10 to 75 per cent. less.
