* . ==- r SOUTH CAROLINA NEWS. ?Chester. February 6: George Hairier was killed here this afternoon by Sam Franklin. Both are colored. The two were members of a work crew and the tragedy occurred on the edge of the city, near the Eureka mill, where the crew was engaged scattering ballast. The fatal shot found lodgment near the heart. Franklin was arrested and Is now in thb county jail. ? Gaffney special of Wednesday to Columbia State: On last Monday four well known local traders left Gaffney for Spartanburg to engage in trading horses. They procured from some place what Is thought to have been wood alcohol, of which they all drank pretty freely. The names of the men aie J. F. Farmer. Hosea Bright, Bud Bright and W. H. Scogglns. They spent Monday night in Spartanburg. Tuesday ' ?i?w* 71nn on/1 QtQ rt?*rl HISuI ui muuui 4jivui u>i(v? for Gaffney this morning, but Farmer died between that point and Cowpens and the others are said to be In a critical condition a^ Cowpens. ? Says an Aiken special of February 5. to the News and Courier: A surveying party of the South Carolina % Public Service Corporation, who are surveying the electric road from Orangeburg to Aiken, are now camping near Kltchlng's mill. There are fourteen Iri the party and they are now at work surveying the road through k ' Shaw's Fork. They will reach Aiken probably some time this week. Their Intention Is to come up Red's branch and enter Aiken from the east. They are seeking to establish a grade of not over 1 per cent. The road as surveyed runs through some very fine farming country In Aiken and Orangeburg counties, and it will be a great thing for the people and property holders along the line. The road as surveyed runs from Orangeburg to Springfield, and thence to Aiken in an almost direct line, making a saving In distance between Springfield and Aiken of about half the present distance. ? S|tartanburg Herald. Thursday: At i a meeting of the board of directors of { Lockhart cotton mills held in VT rYork at Deering. Milllken & Co.'s offices several days ago. Mr. Alfred Moore was elected assistant treasurer nnd general manager of the mill. Mr. Moore has been superintendent of the Tucapau mills for several years. He is a brother of Mr. Thomas Moore, i president of the million and a quarter dollar Loray mills at Gastonla, N. C., j one of the finest and largest mills in i the south, and also president and 1 I treasurer of Gaffney Manufacturing 1 company, and treasurer of Tucapau mills. Mr. Alfred Moore is an expe rlenced mill man and he will no doubt ? prove as successful as his brother, Mr. T. E. Moore. It was reported In the city Tuesday that Mr. Moore had been . elected assistant treasurer and general manager of the Lockhart mills, but It was not confirmed until yesterday when In answer to an Inquiry, Deering. Milliken & Co.. of New York, selling agents for the mill, wired the Herald as follows: "Telegram received. Alfred Moore was appointed assistant treasurer of Lockhart." The meeting ^ \ was held In the offices of Deering. Mil- ( liken & Co. The Lockhart cotton mills i were Incorporated in 1895. The capac Ity of the mill is 26000 spindles and ( *00 looms. John C. Carey Is president ] W^- and treasurer of the mill. The mill ' manufactures brown sheeting. ? Governor Ansel on last Tuesday \ Issued a rule against J. M. Kawlinson, ' Joseph B. Wylle and John Black, of j the board of dispensary directors to ( show cause why they should not be 1 removed from office. The- rule was made returnable today at noon. This method of procedure was determined upon after listening to argument by I counsel. Mr. J. E. McDonald appeared before the governor as attorney for Mr. Wylle, and Attorney General Lyon represented the state. Mr. McDonald did not question the right of the governor to remove the directors; but arI gued that inasmuch as the statutes , did not prescribe a method, there was | nothing left but to fall back on the | common law practice and give the ac- , cused the right to show cause. Mr. , Lyon agreed with Mr. McDonald, and there was no dispute. During the course of his argument before the governor, Mr. McDonald took occasion p to say that he had always been opposed to the dispensary method of I handling whisky and that he sincerely hoped it would be abolished. In that ' , event, of course, there would be neeu for no further proceedings In this case. Attorney General Lyon prepared the bill of complaint against the direc tors. It sets forth in detail the various charges that were preferred by the ( legislative investigating committee. It is quite probable that the hearing will assume the dimensions of a trial and will last for several days. ?B?ial Jotiys. ^ Clubmakers For The Enquirer. w The following clubmakers are taking subscriptions to The Enquirer at $1.?5 per annum: J.
