Yorkvllle, S. C., August 31, IMC. Letter to John F Gordon, Yorkvllle, S C. Dear Sir: A man fed his hens half meal and half saw dust; he thought they wouldn't know the difference. He concluded they did when the eggs hatched woodpeckers. Another man painted his house with a paint that was made of half paint substitutes. He didn't know the difference?not till he paid the painter. He had twenty gallons to pay-for, 20 instead of 10. Got fooled 312.50 on the paint. He had 20 days' wages to pay-for, Instead of 10. Fooled $30 in wages. He got a poor Job besides. He paid too much for his eggs and they hatched woodpeckers. Yours truly 13 F W DEVOE & CO P. S ?J. J. KELLER & CO., sell our paint. Prof. Newman's Book Endorsed. K. J. Heading, aireciur ui me Georgia Experiment Station, in writing to the Atlanta Constitution, says: "I wish to cordially indorse and recommend to the farmers and gardeners of the South this little book of 212 pages, from the pen of my old friend and confrere and long time vis-a-vis. Prof. J. S. Newman, late professor of Agriculture and Director of the Agricultural Department of Clemson College, South Carolina. He was for many years director of the Alabama Experiment Station. He was a close associate and vis-a-vis of the writer in the Georgia State Department of Agriculture for quite a nufhber of years. But better than all ?for the present purpose?he has m been all his life a practical gardener, and comes as near knowing all about practical gardening and fruit growing as does any man of my acquaintance. ? In this book he has told the story of the garden in plain, every-day style. He tells how to do things. There are no unnecessary digressions or theoretical discussions. The truth * is, I expected that he would write a larger book; but, perhaps wisely, he has concentrated and condensed into a comparatively small compass, the experience of fifty years in the garden Itself." CARROLL BROS. < All ' Newspaper Readers ; Are more or less familiar with the ? insurance scandals uncovered by the in vent lenti mi in New York last year. _ On the recommendation of the com- J: mittee that conducted the investigation radical changes were made by the New York legislature which was in session for several months in the early t part of this year, to become effective January 1, 1907. To comply with this law every life company doing business _ in South Carolina today, except the ~ Mutual Benefit, will be forced to make radical charges in most of Its policies and business methods if it continues to do business in New York after Jan- j uary 1. The Mutual Benefit will con- ' tinue without changing a word in any of its policies or making any change in its methods of doing business. The new law Is intended to protect every Interest of the policy holder and that < is what the Mutual Benefit has been doing since the day it was organized in 1845, and that is why it is recog- _ nized all over the United States as r belner the test company and writing / the best policy for the policy holder.
