ROCK HILL AND VICINITY. Trouble Among the Negroes?Work of the Mayor?Personal and Other Notes. Cnrrrwondeoce of the Vorkville hnquuer. Roch Hill. July 23.?There was an exceedingly live session of Esquire Beckham's court Monday morning. The trouble was a free for all. catchas-Catch-can, every man for himself and the devil take the hindmost fight, indulged in by the attendants at a religious meeting at Mt. Hebron colored church near Lesslie Sunday. The court room was jammed full of colored citizens and the overflow extended all the way through the narrow hall, J An.M *Vftsv Inf A t Kr? of poof UUYYI1 IIIC Siaii naj uuv tuv 0%iVvw The situation was one better to imagine than to breathe. There were two charges against Charley Young. Isaac Wilson and John Davie, to wit: "assault with intent to kill," the respective targets being "Judge" Blair, Charley Young and Ben Fewell. The other charge against them was: "disturbing religious worship and carrying concealed weapons. Each of them was fined $25 in the first and $35 on the second charge. On the charge of assault they were bound over to the circuit court In the amount of $200 each. Mayor Roddey's strenuous methods have caused a dearth of applications for treatment at his dispensatory which is open on Monday mornings. This monring however, it seemed that an epidemic had struck the town judging from the numbers of of heroic doses administered by the city's chief executive. After it was all over Chief Partlow was seen wending his way to the bank with both hands bulgingly full of all kinds of money. The mornings practice amounted to about $295 booked. One hundred of this, however, was not collected as "the lady" preferred the alternative of leaving the city never to return, a riddance long desired. Messrs. Chas. L. Cobb and Sam'l Frledheim, Sr., two of our popular "iH?no who have been sojourning in the city hospital for several weeks, recovering from operations, are again at their homes. Mr. Charles W. F. Spencer is still confined to his room but is getting along finely and expects to be out in a week or two. Rev. W. C. Winn, who has been stationed here for several years on the North Rock Hill circuit has has been compelled on account of the health of himself and family, to give up his ministerial work for the present. He and his family have gone on a visit of several months to relatives in Arkansas. Rev. Mr. Youngblood will take charge of Mr. Winn's circuit during the latter's absence. Rev. E. J. Ransom occupied the pulpit of the Associate Reformed Presbyterian church Sunday morning. He is making a canvass of the churches to solicit aid for the Spartanburg Mission of which he has charge. Miss Herbert Bays, after a visit to her sisters In this city, has returned to her home In Charleston. Dr. and Mrs. Clarence Kuykendal have returned from Cleveland Springs. Misses Agnes and Louise Fewell, Carrie Bell Poag and Lillie Earle Sadler, are spending the summer at Montreat. N. C. Misses Robbie Miner anu ?.uuua Bell left Monday for Yorkville and other points. Miss Hazel Grist of Yorkville, is visiting Mrs. Lillian Adams. Misses Louise and Sidney Gage of Union have returned home after a visit to their aunt, Mrs. D. P. Steele. Mrs. Jno. W. O'Neal and children are visiting relatives in Winnsboro. Misses Mary Love and Bessie Barron are in Winnsboro for Miss Miriam Jordan's marriage. Mr. John Johnson of Marietta, Ga., is a visitor in the city. Mr. Albert Friedheim is visiting in Norfolk. Va. Misses Mary and Hattie Meek Moore will go to Asheville this week to visit their grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J. Leonidas Moore. ? MERE-MENTION. The dispensary was closed as the result of a Brlce law election in Lancaster county. ? Charleston special of July 21, to Columbia State: The annual statement of the business of the last year at the Charleston postofflce has been made and It makes a very satisfactory and encouraging showing, speaking well for the business and prosperity of the city. The figures of the past year are in marked contrast with those of four years ago, when Postmaster Harris fast took the office. The receipts of the office for the past year are $128,810, against $108,414 for 1802-3, an increase of 20 per cent. The registry business shows 98,737 letters and parcels handled. against 63,842 of four years ago; money orders sold, 27,223, of the value of $238,690. against 14.994, of the value of $143 503; money orders paid, 41,974. of the value of $285,248, against 30,561. amounting to $290,761. The number of special delivery letters was 13,600 for the past year, against 10.542 for four years ago. ? Columbia Record; Associate Justice Woods rendered yesterday afternoon a decision in the injunction proceedings brought by Mr. W. H. Duncan, a taxpayer of Barnwell, against the state board of education, to prevent the board from creating a central depository for school books. The arguments were made before Justice Woods at Marion several days ago. Yesterday's decision dissolves the temporary restraining order and sustains the contention of the board that it had the right under the law to create the proposed depository. Mr. Duncan sought to show that by creating this depository and allowing a commission of ten per cent, the cost of books were raised by that amount and the bids lit- refore were not as low as they appeared. The state board contended in reply that there would be no increase in cost. The court held that the statute in the case was broad enough to authorize the acprobable event that further proceedtion of the board. Except in the linings are instituted, the R. L. Bryan I company of this city, to whom has been awarded the central depository, will henceforth handle all the books to be used In the common schools of the state. AT THE CHURCHES. FIRST PRESBYTERIAN.
