SOUTH CAROLINA NEWS. ? Says a Columbia special of February 23, to the Greenville News: The receipts from the privilege tax have reached high water mark. Up to date for 1906 the tax on fertilizers has aggregated $96,000. By the end of February it will be $100,000. This Is the largest Income ever recorded from this tax. For 1905 the tax aggregated $130,000 and up to the same date In 1905 the tag tax was only $48,000. More fertilizers than ever are to be used this year. Whether this means more acreage. more fertilizers per acre or fertilizer for other crops Is not known. ? Charleston, Feb. 23: Otto Beers, a riaiMMan In c* -n nl AV C\t P F. Dairying In South Carolina.?In a report of the department of agriculture for the past year on dairying in the south, the statement is made that South Carolina is supplied with dairy products almost wholly from the north. Condensed milk, cream and butter, and practically all the cheese consumed are from the north, while the South Carolina farmer devotes practically his whole attention to raising' cotton. The cultivation of cotton upon the * same fields year after year, rapidly exhausts the soil, which must be reR" thf "OA nf fnmmercial fertil lzers at high prices. The great need of this section, it Is declared, Is live stock; and dairy cattle should be among the first live stock introduced. The south can produce greater quantities of feed at less cost than any other section of the country, but the lack of knowledge regarding the handling, care and feeding of dairy stock and the kind of crops to grow Is the great drawback, and one with which the dairy division should be in a position to cope, hoth by sending Its own men to the farms, and by co-operating with the state experiment station and with dairy organizations. To study these questions, B. H. Raw!, dairyman at Clemson college, has been appointed as aa expert. His work thus far has been to travel from point to point, studying the field and lending what encouragement he can to those who desire to go into dairying. ,Mr. Rawl has met with an enthusiastic reception, and he should be given several assistants, as hundreds of farmers have already shown themselves anxious for Information and guidance. At Easley, a number of men hive organized a cheese factory, and through the efforts of Mr. Rawl have been induced to build silos. Great Interest Is taken In the work by other dairymen In the state, many having indicated a desire to go to Easley and learn the methods and it Is expected to make this an objective center for dairy Information.
