SOUTH CAROLINA NEWS. Judge Gage Still III. ^ Judge-Gage undertook to preside over ( the circuit court in Spartanburg this 1 week; but was so ill on Wednesday v . morning that it was necessary to ad- ? journ the court indefinitely. Tribute to Dr. Carlisle. Spartanburg special of Wednesday to News and Courier: This afternoon * about 150 citizens of our city marched over to Dr. Carlisle's residence, and Mr. Stobo Simpson, after Dr. Carlisle r came to the porch, stated that a few citizens had walked over to congratulate him on his 79th birthday. In t- * 3 ~ u ~ fho HftOtrtr toucning wurua lie aooui tw v??v of the high esteem he was held in by ' every one in the city. Dr. Carlisle was much affected by the friendly demonstration, and said that if his life could A be spared 200 years he could not repay c his friends for this evidence of their friendship and good-will. Men from ( shops and counters and offices paid f this tribute, and there would have been 1,000 if it had been generally known. It was a deserved tribute to manly . worth. Influence of the Dispensary. r The dispensary is weakening as a i political factor in this state, and the ^ time is coming when politicians will * not so readily bend the knee to Baal. In the recent primary of the Second congressional district, one of the candidates, Mr. Leon J. Williams of Edgefield, did not fail to remind the voters 8 on every occasion that he had successfully steered the dispensary through trials and tribulations for eight years, and this was a patent right to their affections and support. Alas, the vot- c ers did not see it that way, and Mr. Williams was left in the lurch, although he said during the campaign that he had been working all these years to become a congressman ultimately. He made a mistake in not running two years ago, when everybody agreed upon "the best solution." ?Greenville Mountaineer. a Highway Robbery In Greenville. T enAnioi rVkinmhJji State: U1CC1IVIIIC o^cvim vv v>v.w...w.w On Thursday night last, between 10 and 11 p'clock, Dr. I. E. Crimm was going to his office on Main street, in the second story of the Burgess building, and he was accosted just as he reached the office door in the dark hallway with a gruff demand for his mon- ? ey and diamonds, and a pistol was w thrust into his face, while he was or- y dered to hold up his hands. Dr. Crimm ? was taken completely by surprise and as he was unarmed at the time there was nothing to do except surrender for the time being to the inevitable. The ? bandit grasped the necktie of Dr. g Crimm, where he usually wears a dia- _ mond pin, and then demanded his diamond ring, placing his weapon near his victim's temple. He grasped the right hand of Dr. Crimm. on which he wore a ruby ring, and in getting it off the finger was badly bruised. He had asked for money and received $6, and just as the ring was secured by him the passing of a number of persons in h front of the door on Main street caused g him to take flight down the back stairs. r< , . CI A Needed Exhortation.?In open- a ing court at Saluda on Monday, Judge e] Gary spoke very earnestly to the grand t, jury of the prevalence of crime and exhorted them, and all good citizens to V( see that the violators of law are pun- %v ished. Here is an extract from the n report of the court proceedings taken e1 from the State: "True bills were found C( against Clarence Thompson, charged s, with shooting J. M. Ward; John Yarbrough for shooting P. B. Havird; g Morgan Thrailkil and son for killing _ Ben Burton: Bunyan Gillion and broth- fj er for shooting C. N. Douglass." In ?| most of these cases, if not in all, white a, men were concerned both as shooters Q1 and shootees. Evidently the judge's f, exhortation was needed.?Newberry >' Observer. ci AT THE CHl/HCIIES. t] si tl FIRST PRESBYTERIAN. n rev. w. g. neville, pastor. 14 Sunday Services?Morning services at 11 o'clock, and in the evening at 8.15 o'clock.
