The last of the series of monthly ginner's reports issued by the department of agriculture was made public at noon today, and as received by Gattis & Co. the crop ginned up to February 18, was 10,014,554 bales. This is considerably under expectations, and on the strength of such low figures May contracts went steadily up from 13.85 to very nearly 15 cents. The greater part of the rise was accomplished within a few minutes. All indications are that actual cotton is having but slight effect on the market prices being altogether a matter of . manipulation. Some of the local experts say that there need be no occasion for surprise if contracts get to 20 cents or even higher within the next month or two. It is the first time within the recollection of anybody in this section when manipulators have had such complete control of the situation. and the laws of supply and demand entered to such a small extent in the matter of price. Can Serve Both.?A majority of the exchanges coming to our office contain editorial mention of the fact that Hon. John Bell Towill upon becoming a dispensary commissioner withdrew from the church. They are loud In their praise, claiming that there was no other course open to him. We do not agree with our brothers, for if Mr. Towill is honest in what he says as to the manner in which he will discharge the duties of that office, and we believe he is, there is no reason why he should not be a member of the church, and we are glad to learn that some weeks ago our friend deposited his church letter with the TtatViloViom Ttnntlat church, near this place, and Is again In the fold.? Batesburg Advocate. Gen. Lee For President.?With his claims strongly urged by his friends, Gen. Fitzhugh Lee may figure prominently in the Democratic national convention at St. Louis. A movement in his favor was started today and he was asked whether it would be agreeable to him to be considered as a candidate for the presidency. Gen. Lee affects to treat the matter humorously. He said today that his position as head of the great Jamestown Exposition company precludes his taking interest "in other matters of lesser import." The Lee boom was born soon after Congressman Grosvenor made his address at the banquet of the Jamestown Exposition company at Old Point Comfort on Saturday night and urged the South to come again to the front. Virginians are divided between Gen. Lee and Senator John W. Daniel. They would be glad to see either head the ticket, but if this is not to be, either Cleveland and Lee or Cleveland and Daniel would be heartily supported? Richmond dispatch of March 22.
