Off For the Pen. A penitentiary guard came up Wednesday morning and took the following prisoners, convicted at the recenl term of the court of general sessions for this county, to Columbia: Samuel McCraven, sentenced for two years; Maggie McCreery, two years; _ Ezekiel Ford, one year in the state reformatory. McCraven is white. The other two are Negroes. The Government Made Good. Mr. Jerry Walker, of Clover, received a brand new five-dollar bill from the treasury department one day last week, to replace a bill that was recently destroyed while in his possession. It seems that in some way one Hov Vflhnmrv a bill belonging to Mr. Walker vaas tramped into the mud by a mule. Not caring: to loose the " money, Mr. Walker set about laying the matter before the treasury department, and with the assistance of Mr. W. B. Wylie,. succeeded to the extent 1 that the government Anally replaced the old bill with a new one. All Three Landed. Sheriff Logan and Magistrate S. N. Johnson, whose absence in North Carolina after certain prisoners for whom they had requisitions, have returned. Sheriff Logan brought back his man, James Howard, wanted for an assault committed against G. A. Buchanan. Howard was brought back to Rock l. Hill and was released on bond. Magistrate Johnson committed the men he went after?Whit Wright and Charlie Floyd?to Jail. These two men are wanted for participation in a recent riot in Bethel township. Magistrate Johnson got on their trail shortly after the riot, and by means of some highly creditable detective work, ran them to cover. Captured Again. James Lowry, the Negro desperado, who Is wanted at Shelby, N. C., for the murdA of Chief of Police Jones, of that place, about two years ago, has been captured again, this time in Tennessee, and there is reason to believe that he will show up as the identical James Lowry who is wanted. A York county man who was at Jelllco, some weeks ago, and who knows James Lowry well, learned from some York county Negroes that the murderer was working on a railroad near Jelllco, and this York county man put the authorities on the trail of the fellbw. The Jelllco authorities have telA egraphed Shelby that they have the man in custody; but The Enquirer has not yet learned whether the identification has been completed. Death of Mr*. Samuel E. White. Charlotte Observer, Wednesday: A telephone message from Fort Mill, yesterday, brought the intelligence of the death of Mrs. White, the wife of Capt. S. E. White, which occurred yesterday afternoon. Death was very sudden. U Mrs. White had seemed to be in perfect health in the forenoon. After talking to her husband on the porch of their residence she walked into the bath-room in the house and fell, expiring almost immediately. Mrs. Leroy Springs, the daughter and only child of Mrs. White, is in Baltimore. She is expected to arrive in Fort Mill either today or tomorrow, and the funeral services will be held some time * tomorrow. Charlotte relatives and friends of Mrs. White who went to Fort Mill yesterday evening were: Mrs. John M. Scott, Mr. Eli B. Springs, Mr. D. P. Hutchinson, Miss Selene Hutchinson. Mrs. L. J. Massey, of Fort Mill, who was the guest of her sister, Mrs. R. L. Gibbon, in this city, and is a devoted friend of Mrs. White, \ also left on the evening train for Fort Mill. Mrs. White was well-known to Charlotte people and had many friends and relatives in this section. She was the daughter of the late Robert Allison. of Concord, and a sister of Mrs. J. M. Odeli and Mr. John Allison, of Concord, and Rev. Joseph Allison, of Louisiana. Among the relatives in the city were Mrs. D. P. Hutchinson, a niece, and Mrs. C. E. Tate, a cousin. "% A message from Fort Mill last night stated that entire county and town are saddened over the unexpected death, and the deepest sympathy Is felt ror Capt. White, who is almost prostrated. Mrs. White was wholly responsible to all demands made upon her socially and charitably. She was a woman that all of a community loved, and she was beloved by all who knew her. She was a devoted Christian and a member of the Presbyterian church. Magnolia Mining Company. Columbia State, Thursday: The Magnolia Mines company of Charleston has applied for a commission to open books of subscription. They propose to have a capitalization of *300,000 at *1 per share. The corporators are ^ George P. Howell, of Charleston, and * John M. Sears, of Memphis. The application asks for the right to engage in almost every known business, including mining of gold, coal, iron, silver, copper, etc., to cut lumber and to engage in rice planting. The company will be operated in Berkeley county, but will also have an office at Hickory Grove, in York county. Messrs. MorHcai Xt OnHsrtfvn- a Charleston firm of m distinguished lawyers, is applying for the commission in behalf of the corporators. The Charleston Post says: "The company is organized for the purpose of mining gold, silver and other metals in York county. The general headquarters of the company will be located in Charleston. The company will have offices at Hickory Grove, York county, also. The corporators t are Major John M. Sears, United States engineer at Memphis, and Capt, George P. Howell, United States engineer at Charleston. The company will have a paid in capital of $300,000. The attorneys for the company are Mordecai & Cadsden. The Magnolia Mines company, it is understood, has purchased or leased a large tract of valuable land in York county. The property is rich in gold, iron and other . metals, which will bo mined. The company will pay especial attention of the mining of gold. Many years ago, gold mines were worked extensively by hand in York county, but this process was slow and proved to be unprofitable, and of recent years the mines were abandoned. The Magnolia Mines company will put in all necessary machinery for mining gold and other minerals. Capt. Howell, who is named as one of the corporators of the mining company, arrived last Saturday, succeeding Capt. J. C. Sandiford as river and harbor engineer of this district." ^ AT THE CHURCHES.
