come back promptly. It should have reached Sheriff Logan on last Friday night. It failed to come until Monday, v. and inclosed with it was a note explaining that Hammond had "escaped" from the guardhouse while the officer was giving in "supplies." There was no reward for Hammond, and it may be this is the reason why he was not held by the Hickory authorities. Anxlontt For a Lynching. There has been a great deal of excitement at Lincolnton, N. C., during the past few days because of a criminal assault committed on Mrs. Caleb Brown by a Negro named Calvin Elliott. The Negro was arrested shortly after the crime, and at a preliminary examination held on Monday of last week, was positively identified by Mrs. Brown. He was committed to jail. As news of the affair spread, the people became more and more excited, until the lynching spirit reached a high nitch. A small mob gathered on Mon day, but did nothing but discuss the matter. Another larger mob, on Wednesday night, approached the jail; but did not attempt to enter. By Saturday nigh turtle crowd had grown larger and bolder, and at 2 o'clock Sunday morning a determined attack was niade on the jail. There were about 25 men in the party. They broke into the front door, went up stairs and tried to get into the steel cells; but failed in the attempt. While they were at work the jailer slipped out and summoned a number of citizens to his aid. Because of the approach of citizens and because of the difficulty of getting into the cells, the would-be lynchers gave up the undertaking. In the meantime the sheriff of Lincoln appealed to the governor of North Carolina for assistance and the governor ordered the military companies at Charlotte to hold themselves in readiness to go to Lincolnton. On Monday, however, all became quiet, and it is thought that there is no longer any danger from the mob. The excitement was allayed by the promise of the governor to call a special term of the court for the immediate trial of the Negro. AT THE CHURCHES. THE CHURCH OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD. REV. J. C.
