0 in urging the authorities to have the . Sunday laws against outdoor games strictly enforced. Members of the board declared that if the ministers were allowed to carry the point, great harm would come and the fashionable visitors wouldn't spend their money where they couldn't do as they pleased. The crusade, however, was not allowed to. drop when the council refused to ; send the police to the links, and other methods have been resorted to by the ministerial element. The Revs. T. W. Clift, W. A. Kelly, F. D. Jones, Henry 1 Miller and Father J. L. Seidl, representing the Episcopal, Presbyterian, Methodist, Baptist and Catholic congregations, and the original signers of the petition, came out in a statement in which l? was said that tne pulpits | would ring with the "wrongdoing of the Four Hundred." The visiting colony in the town has declined to discuss the affair, although leading members are severe in their denunciation of the preachers. They declare that it is unjust and simply the work of sensation seekers. Business men of the town are not opposed to the Sunday sport, although the local authorities have been placed in an unfortunate position. If the ministers are allowed to have their way there are fears that Aiken will lose its popularity, yet, at the same time i the church element is so bitter in its ' crusade that an open clash may result. It is said that Mr. Whitney personally, is displeased, and as he is one of the 1 wealthiest property owners of the town J the citizens are not disposed to incur 1 his enmity. < AT THE CHURCHES. A CARD TO THE PUBLIC. i AFTER due consideration by the 1 home or local board of directors of ' the United Mutual Life Insurance com- ! pany of South Carolina, it was decided to pay Mr. James Duncan five hundred dollars, although Mr. Duncan was not a member in good standing: therefore, under the rules of this company was not entitled to anything. But this board, desiring to be fair to all members and faithful to the trust confided to them, have offered to pay at least the above amount, and the following will explain why our friend in question Is not in eood standing. The full amount of his fee should have been $3.75, and on the day of his write up. he paid $1.50, ; the balance being $2.35, for which he gave the following paper: 1 "On the 20th day of December, 1901, I promise to pay to the United Mutual Life Insurance Company of South Carolina, ($2.25) two dollars and twentyfive cents, the full amount of my membership fee, or stand debarred from all rights and benefits offered by this company, this 11th uay of December. 1901. Witness JAMES DUNCAN. John G. Neely." This balance was never paid, and in closing this card will say that I hope this will suffice to allay all doubts of this company's true intentions in the minds of the people of this state and place its enemies in their true light.
