annum. There have been lmportan classification changes, too. No pensioi is to be allowed to a soldier or widov who has an income of more than $150 In class A are included soldiers wh< are physically helpless as the result o: wounds. "An Important act Is that which allows the sale of farm products in incorated towns without the payment ol license fees. "A Joint resolution was passed providing for the Investigation of the expenditure of public funds in state colleges, and a resolution providing for ths investigation of the dispensary, passed the senate, but did not reach the house in time for action. "You have noted that the harmful resolution to extend the time for paying taxes to April 1 has been passed. "There was quite a sensation just before adjournment because of what looked like the effort of certain senators and representatives to smuggle through on a free conference report, a bill providing for the election of beer dispensers by the state board Instead of by county boards. The thing looked very bad and sub-committees of the house and senKaon on ate Judiciary commmeeo u?>c pointed to Investigate it thoroughly." "The act providing for the insurance of public buildings, state and county, except the asylum and college buildings, in the insurance department of the sinking fund commission was made mandatory. Under the law, as it now stands, I do not think there is any authority for the Insurance of any of the property specified In an old line company. Such policies written subsequent to January 1, 1901, are invalid. "Another important item of pension legislation, is that which sets apart $2,000 of the $200,000 appropriation for the purchase of artificial limbs for old soldiers. Applications for the benefit of this appropriation must be made within 90 days of the approval of the act." LOCAL LACOltlbk^ Supervisor* of Registration. The new board of supervisors of registration for York county is as follows: D. C. Clark, of Yorkville; J. A. C. Love, of Clover: and J. W. Marshall, of Rock Hill. The two last named members displace Messrs. W. A. Fewell, of Rock Hill; and I. B. Gordon, of Yorkville. The newly appointed members have not yet been commissioned; but they probably will be before the next regular meeting of tne board, on salesday in March. TkeAew- Jw Law. Clerk or tne court ?ymr, Neely and Auditor Williams have been quite busy during the past few days preparing the jury boxes under the new law. This law provides that the names of one-third of the qualified voters of the county be placed in the box each year. This means that the York box must contain about 1,200 names, and of these 198 must serve during the year. The six grand jurors who were drawn from the former jury to serve during the present year are, of course, relieved from further service. Child Burned to Death. yC. The little 4-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Latham, who live near Hoodtown, was burned to death last Friday. Mr. and Mrs. Latham left the house to attend to the milking. While they were gone, a Negro who occupied a cabin near by, was attracted by screams. Rushing Into the Latham home he beheld the child enveloped in flames, and although he tore off its clothing at once, he was too late. The little girl was badly burned from its knees to its head. Dr. W. A. Hood was summoned; but he was unable to afford any relief. The little sufferer breathed her last shortly after noon. "Doctors" Differ. Charlotte Observer: "Dr." James Mack was before the recorder for an assault on his pal, "Dr." Chas. Crowder From the evidence given it seems thai Crowder gave Mack 90 cents with which to buy a ticket to Fort Mill, S. C., and heine left bv the train he asked Macfc several times for the money, whereupon Mack hauled away and slugged hire twice in the jaws. Mack denied making the assault and said that he kept the money to keep Crowder from getting drunk. He was fined the costs of the trial for the assault. Both of these men, who cal] themselves "doctors," make up and sell some sort of dirty dark fluid; Crowder calls his "Spencer's Sarsaparilla," and Mack calls his "The Golden Celery and Sarsaparilla Compound." Each of them claims that his medicine will cure almost all knowr diseases. One may guess the value ol the stuff when he knows that a magistrate in this county has a warrant to be served on Crowder, who sold some oi his medicine to a white woman, whc was made very sick by taking the stuff, MERE-MENTION.
