? The astronomic brethren have not yet given out all hope of the meteoric shower for which they have been looking during the past few years. The shower having failed to appear year before last and again last year, they looked for it again this year, keeping a close watch between the 12th and 15th Instants. Quite a number of falling stars were seen on the night of the 14th by different observers; but from no point was anything like the expected shower reported. AT TUB CHURCHES. To the People of Yorkvllle and York County: SMALLPOX Is epidemic on a large scale in the southeastern part of the county. The situation is so serious as to threaten a general spread of this most loathsome disease. On Monday night, the 18th instant, a meeting of the members of the Yorkville town council, the Yorkville board of health, and the presidents of the local cotton mills, was held in the Yorkville town council chamber for the purpose of considering the situation in its relation to the comfort and safety of the people of the town and community. After due consideration of the situa tlon as it is now presented in the light of past experience, it was decided that although the town and community are gTavely menaced, there is no recourse or reasonable hope of protection outside of general vaccination. Pursuant to instructions from the conference, I hereby urge every individual citizen of the town and community, white and black, male and female, to submit to vaccination forthwith, and by the same authority I also request that physicians of Yorkville and community give their valuable assistance in persuading the public of its danger and informing it of its only reasonable hope of immunity. From the information developed, I am persuaded that the situation is very grave, and upon my own motion I beg to express the hope that the recommendation above outlined will be carried \ into effect without opposition and with the least possible delay.
