Darlington last, and the mere fact that he can enjoy a deer hunt in his 83d year shows that he must be a man of iron constitution. May he live long and go on many more deer hunts is the wish of The News and hundreds of people in this community. MtirglHrx mi ( Nrllit'r. Says a Union dispatch of December 15 to the News and Courier: A wholesale robDery occurred at Carlisle last night and $450 was taken from various places in the town. There have been some two or three tramps loafing around Carlisle for several days. They stated that they were on their way to Camden junction, where a new bridge is being built, and that they were bridge workmen, but they continued to hang around town until last evening. They were absent this morning when the robberies were discovered. It is suspected very strongly that they are the robbers. Messrs. Smith and Welch's safe was opened and $150 taken from it. The postoffice was broken into and $150 in stamps taken out. and the Seaboard railroad office was broken ppen and $150 stolen, making a total of $450, which is not bad for one night's haul. It is to be hoped that the guilty parties will be apprehended and the money recovered, while they receive their just deserts. Tliw Exfmxltlon Appropriation. Charleston Post Friday: Capt. F. W. Wagener and Major J. C. Hemphill returned to Charleston this morning from Washington, where with Capt. J. Elmore Martin and Mr. R. B. Lebby, they appeared before Senators Tillman and McLaurin and South Carolina members of the house, in the interest of the passage of the senate bill through the house. Captain Martin and Mr. L.ebby remained in Washington. Major Hemphill stated to an Evening Post reporter today that the situation was fully discussed and plans were formulated for the passage of the bill. The matter will be considered first by the sub-committee of the committee on appropriations. Major Hemphill said that Senator Tillman had assured the delegation that there will be little or no trouble in getting the bill before the house, and all indications point to favorable action. >j|!| There Coal In Fairfield. /I'he Winnsboro News and Herald recently claimed that a deposit of coal had been discovered in the eastern part of the county. The deposit was found on land belonging to Mrs. S. F. DuBose. A specimen of the coal was taken to Winnsboro and it is said to be a good sample of anthracite coal. The land was not thought to be valuable. Recently it became necessary to dig a well on the place. The well digger had formerly been a coal miner. After getting down about 12 feet he struck a layer of what seemed to be coal and fur/?io-?{nor liim in Vli<3 I'iPW. tllCl UI551II5 VVUM4MIVV* - He made excavations through the vein to the depth of 151 feet, and it is said that the coal, or whatever mineral it may be, is of fine quality. It is likely that the geologist of Clemson college j will be requested to go to Fairfield to make an examination. There is no railroad running nearer the place than Winnsboro, which is 12 miles distant, but should it turn out that there is a deposit of coal there, it will lead to a great business boom in that section. A Remarkable Cane. 1 Columbia Record, Saturday: The case of A. J. Dent, a young man formerly of this city, is a sad one, though it possesses some remarkable features. He is addicated to the morphine, cocaine, whisky and cigarette habits to an extent that is wonderful even to the medical profession. It is asserted that he takes 10 grains of morphine, 100 grains of cocaine, lj pints of whisky, 1.75 grains of atropine and 100 cigarettes daily. His mind is little affected. but he realizes himself that he must be cured or death will soon claim him. He is a son of the late Sheriff Dent. His own story is that in 1895 he was injured in a wreck on the Texas and Pacific railroad, in Texas, and had 13 ribs broken, his heart knocked five and one-half inches out of place, one arm broken, and his palate and throat torn open. He lay in a hospital for two or three months under opiates, and it was thus that he contracted the terrible habit. He has a wife and two ^ children and made his way back to his former home penniless. Some of his friends are subscribing to a fund to give him the Keely treatment, and arrangements will doubtless be made to care for his wife and children in the meantime. ( / Deafness Cannot be Cured * by local applications, asthev cannot reach the diseased portion of the ear. There is i only one way to cure deafness, and that is by constitutional remedies. Deafness is caused by an inilamed condition of the mucous lining of the Eustachian Tube. When this tube gets inilamed you have ) a rumbling sound or imperfect hearing, and when it. is entirely closed deafness is the result, and unless the inflammation can he taken out and this tube restored to its normal condition, hearing will be destroyed forever; nine eases out of ten f are caused by catarrh, which is nothing but an intlamcd condition of the mucous surfaces. G. H. O'LEARY'S. THE DEERE DISK PLOW." WE HAVE for a long time been on the lookout for a Disk Plow that we would feel entirely safe in offering .o the farmers of this section as being L?.e BEST on the market. We have at last settled on the DEERE DISK PLOW, made by John Deere, at Moline, 111. We shall not go into details In this advertisement; but will simply 3ay that we know it is the best because every traveling man who handles agricultural Implements, who has been to see us during the past six months, who we asked about disk plows, told us that the Deere Disk was by far the best, most successful and satisfactory from every standpoint of any on the market. Besides all this we know that John Deere, who has been manufacturing implements for not lesss than 30 years, has the reputation of never yet having sent out anything that was not everything he claimed for it. We will have a sample plow in a few days, and we will be pleased to have those who are interested call and see it. THOSE FARMERS whn their cotton and corn land last fall, winter and spring with twohorse Oliver Plows or Disc Plows, made better crops this year than those who lid not. If you have either style plow It will pay you to use it every day that the. land Is in plowing condition between now and next April, and those svho have neither will be handsomely rewarded if they will buy either style md use it. No charge for this information. YORK IMPLEMENT CO. By L. R. Williams, Manager. t*r take cough ease. It cures. _
