Charlotte Observer, Sunday : Charlie ^ Harper, of Fort Mill, S. C., a white w man who deserted from Battery I, l( Sixth artillery on April 25th, 1898, was w captured yesterday at Coroleen by Offi- w cer Bradley and brought to Charlotte last night. Tomorrow Sergeant Baker will take the deserter to Fort Monroe ^ Va. Fifty dollars reward will be paid ^ for the capture. a, / Death of Mr. H. I. Kimball. j[ Charlotte Observer, Friday : Mr. H. tc I. Kimball, who was formerly from Statesville, died suddenly in Rock lc * '11 ?j ? aP heart nut yesieruay muiuiug u> Uv... ^ disease. For the last three or four j| years he had been living with his w sod, Mr. S. J. Kimball, who has rt a truck and delivery business iD Rock Hill. The deceased was 64 years old. Five children?three sons and two daughters?survive. They are: _ S. J. and J. N. Kimball and Miss Mollie Kimball, of Rock Hill; Mrs. Emma Patterson, of Rowan county, and Mr. D. J. Kimball, of Statesville. Tbe re- 7t mains were taken to Statesville ibis 171 morning for interment. X The J. J. Hunter Bankrupt Stock. B. N. Moore, trustee, has filed a pe , tition for leave to sell tbe stock of goods, store fixtures, etc., of J. J. Hunter, bankrupt, at private sale instead of public auction. Tbe stock in ' a 11 J A /V 4 A has been appraised ai n. number of sealed bids for the stock were opeued last Friday. The highest cash bid was 62J cents on the dollar. 7. Mr. Hunter himself submitted a bid of 70 cents, coupled with a proposition requiring 90 days in which to pay, and certian other conditions. There is to be a meeting of creditors on 1)1 March 10 for the purpose of considering such bids as have been submitted, ? and determining whether the stock shall be disposed of by private or auc- ? tion sale. The reporter has no infor^ mation as to the liabilities of this estate; but it develops that the estimate of 75 cents on the dollar suggested K when the bankruptcy was first announced, was far too high. It is now ? certain that tbe estate win not pay oo cents and it is quite likely that it will s] fall under 25 cents. 01 "* Price of Fertilizers. While a number of farmers are doing more or less talking, and making more ~ or less investigation of the fertilizer _j question, it is hardly fair to say that / tbe subject is one of deep interest in in this section. At least tbe fertilizer J' dealers appear to be showing but small F concern. From inquiry of a number 15 of dealers, it appears that the local F price is slightly 10 per cent, over what was being demanded last year. To be more exact, staudard arooniated goods _ sold last year at $18 a ton, and this year tbe dealers are trying to get from jd $20 to $21. Some sales have been j] made at $20 ; but since the $20 stocks ? were laid in, there have been two adB vauces, one of 50 cents a few days uf- _ ter January 1, aud another of 25 ceuts about two weeks ago. Some of the y ? : - ? 1 \1 dealers having sola meir ongmai stocks have made new purchasers _ since the advance. As to the amount <r of sales compared with this time lust I year, it is hardly practicable to uiuke a definite statement; but it is certain- ly a fact that deliveries have not been ^ so heavy. The percentage of advance in the price of acid is rather greater J than in the case of ammoniated goods. ^ Dealers are now askiug $14 a ton for ii goods that they sold for $12 last year. ,r The indifference of the farmers about p, buying is accounted for iu various ways, the mo3t reasonable explanation 0i being doubt as to whether the iu- ^ ? vestmeut is warranted by the probable price of cotton. ( SOUTH CAROLINA NEWS. ? Shot by a Rabbit. p Cliutou Gazette: Charlie Peden, of Gray Court, while out shooting rabbits ? with a pistol last week, met with a peculiar accideut. He had wounded a rabbit. While kicking, one of its feet k struck the trigger, exploding the revolver, the bullet striking Mr. Peden. ?J MormoiiH In Charleston. e: News aud Courier, Saturday : Mormon eldcis are trying to get iu their work iu Charleston. Two elders, the ~ * advance guard of the fightiug brigade, arrived here yesterday aud duriug the r morning called on Mayor Smith. The object of their visit was to get permis j, siou from the mayor to be allowed to hi preach Mormouism on the streets. 11 Mayor Smith informed the elders thai street preaching was not allowed iu t< Charleston, although he told the elders ? that if they would select some va- _ cant lot he would provide police protection so that the meetings would uot be broken up. "We simply want to get the true doctrine of our church before the people," said one of the elders , to a reporter, "and we think we can do some good in Charleston, pur elders j in this state have been doing wopder- S illy good work and we want the peo le of Charleston lo enjoy some of the ^ enefits of our religion." The elders T 'ere dressed in the ygulation Morion garb-the long sleek minister's coat d the black derby hat of the style in b? se twenty years ago. 4,Ye know it in't de coat dat makes de elder," said serns Manigault, as the Mormons left A le city hall, "but I guess its de pants." Iiey Waut to Go to Congress. Wasbiugton corespondence of the ^ reenville News : Several of the presit congressional delegation in South A arolina, according to statements of oulh Caroliua people comiug to Washigton, may find some difficulty in com- ? ig back at the beginning of uext conress in an official capacity. It is reirded as somewhat strange that the pposition ibis year should be directed gainst the older members of the dele- ^ atiou from South Caroliua. In addi- p on to Colonel Elliott, who will be oposed for renomination by State Sena- sc >r Barnwell, who is considered as one f the brightest men in South Carolina, lessrs. Norton and Wilson will meet J ith more or less opposition for renmination. The former, it is said, will e opposed by State Sentor Appelt, hiie tbe letter's principal opponeut ill probably be State Senator Dean.
