The passage of the Oregon bill was celebrated last night by serenading the Senators elect from that State as well as several other distinguished gentlemen including Hon. Messrs. Letcher, Orr and Stephens, all of whpm responded with short speeches. Afterwards the crowd accompanied by the entire Marine band, went to the White House and treated the President to a few appropriate-airs.? Mr. Buchanan responded, and sincerejf congratulated the friends of the measure on the advent of the State into the Union. He complimented Gen. Lane in high terms, and characterized him as a gallant soldier, and an accomplished statesman ; he had won deserved honors by exertions tending to bring Oregon into the Union. The party then proceeded to the residence of Vice President Breckenridge, who said that whenever he could, he had given the bill a push and expected to swear in both Senators. In regard to Cuba, he said we talked too much, and did toe little; when England, wished to do a thing, she did it, and talked afterward?; If Cuba, instead of being placed at the mopth of the Gulf of Mexico, laid at the opening of the British channel, England would take it in ten days. He was in favor of the acquisition of Cuba. He would not rob for it, but would act with any portion of his fellow-citizens in using all honorable means to acquire it. Catawba Language. A New York paper thus speaks of the observations of Oscar M. Lieber, our State Geologist on the Vocabulary and characteristics of the language of the Catawbas, in a contribution prepared by him for the Historical Society of Sotith Carolina.1 'Before another century has passed away, tbe face of nature, so far as her living forms of aboriginal men and animals are concerned, will, we fear, have greatly changed. The physical features of the continent will indeed remain ; and the mas give and the uiany folded ranges 01 tne iuiegnanies and the vast lakes will furnish tourists with sublime features, from Niagara to the Sault and the pictured rock of Lake Superior, but all else will have suffered mutation. The Indian race will probably have departed, and with it many of the wild animals and birds will also yield to the invasion of the domestic animals which attead the steps of the man of civilization. Perhaps in some secluded gorges and valleys of the Rocky Mountains, or the ravines of the numerous Sierras of Mexico, a few families of the old races may survive, and retain in their neighborhood the deer, the buffalo, and the beaver. But they wilL be rare indeed, if the step of improvement in the future is as neglectful as heretofore of the men of America and the animated natule which clustered about him. 'We confess that we feel no little interest in all that concerns our aborigines, and consider it a duty to preserve every relic of tbeir history, character, traditions and languages. The officers of our army especially, who will be thro wn into contact with the wild raees west of the Mississippi, should, while preserving accurate .notes of the typography, geology, and the plants and auimals of these regions, not forget to secure the manners and customs, and above all, the languages of the various tribes with whom they may come in contact. 'Our attention has been drawn to this subject by perusing a vocabulary of the language of the Catawba tribe of Indians, with remarks on its grammar, construction and pronunciation, by Oscar M. Richer, Esq., the State Geologist of South Carolina. The Catawbas were a race that inhabited a part of the territory of the State of South Carolina, once powerful but now dwiudled down to a handful of about fifty. The analysis of this tongue and the mode pursued to extract its rules of construction aud inflections will be found extremely interesting.? Such a problem of deciphering and re-constructing a tbugue has difficulties akiu to those which attend the unfolding of the mysteries of the monuments of Thebes or Ninevah, and we congratulate Mr. L. on the success with which he has performed the task he has assumed with ft full souse of the obligations resting on him, to rescue from nhlivion what he emphatically characterized as | soon to become not 'only a dead laugauge but a language of the dead.'
