. - _ __ - -- - - however, think, that much of the sobriety of Court week was owing to the great moral infln-~ nee of the venerable man, JitdQb O'Neall, who ' was p&siding in Court. The drunkard was nbash- | ed to appear la his presence drank. I do not beBcve that the same happy fact, the almost total absence of drunkenness, would have heen realised with any other Judge in South Carolina on i ' -our Bench. I look at the matter, as homage in a great degree rendered to the moral worth of a great and good man, and to truth. Drunkenness paid deference to virtue?this is the true version. PETER PONDER. *" For the Yorkville Enquirer. THE SENATORIAL ELECTION. Messrs. Editors;?We noticed in yonr columns a suggestion in relation to the Senatorial election with which we were much pleased. You express a preference for some young man?some one at least not imbued with the spirit of fogyism. You same four?Ksitt, Boyck, Miles and Chesnct. The first three are already in Congress, occupying posts-of honor and responsibility, and thoy can be as asefal to the South in their present position at in any other. Not so with Col. Chesnct. Although occupying a prominent place in the Legislature, he has never had an ample field for the display of talents, which he undoubtedly possesses, and the present Senatorial honor could detolre on no Carolinian more worthy to wear the mantle of Butlkk, Elmore and Calhoun. While he possesses the energy of yooth, he is old enongh to be prudent in council, and his present position in the Legislature, is a sufficient evidence of his commanding dignity. We would, therefore, prefer him before all others not in public life, and hope that his olaims will be pressed successfully by his numerous friends and admirers. . ELMORE. They are all fairly and earnestly at work again. Twenty-one applicants have been admitted since the ovening of the session. A member of the Faculty j told me there were a hundred and seventy students on the campas last Saturday; and the expectation is that there will be over two hundred by January. Public confidence is very far from lost in our College yet. A spirit of order and industry pervades the oampns quite hope-inspiring to the friends of the institution. For one, I see reason to believe that it wilt stand higher in three yefcrs t,ban it has ever done. J. W. D. October 20, 1857. 1 .. Amount of Specie In the Country. It becomes important the present time to ascertain bow much specie there is in the country; in othop words, the amount of that currency which oannot be depreciated or in any way disturbed by aay explosions. The specie basis of the hanks is < stated to be about sixty millions, and the inquiry , turns to the amoant in general oircnlation among , the people. On this point the Philadelphia North American says: "We have taken the pains, for our own satis- 1 faction, to look over the official figures for a series of yeare, in order to approximate a safe opinion 1 upon this subject, and they develope some results < of striking interest at the present juncture, which ought to inspire feelings of encouragement even in ' the most desponding. Cotton.?On the subject of cotton there is but little we can say on the state of the market, for although there have been a few bales sold this week, yet we may say we have no market at all, ! and the only idea we can give of the value of the j article is, that the little which has been sold was . taken at 11@11} cents. The entire sales of the week are scarcely 100 bales. Corn.?The stock of corn is low, and prices are a shade higher. We now quote old 95c0$l : new 85@90 cents ^ bushel. Her illness was protracted through a period of thirty-four days, when death released her from all her sufferings, and introduced her .spirit into the presence of God, in the twenty-ninth year of her age. She was the widow of R. Mc.Bcbris, deceased, and has left three small children to weep as orphans and buffet the stormy billows of life, without the protecting arm of a father, or the guiding counsels and prayers of a mother. The death of Mrs. Bcbbis, is deeply felt, not only by her immediate relatives, but by as many as knew and appreciated her v orth.
