B.tinn can declare mar tial law in the same city to-d.y, and it hias as little effect as the crack of a whip. The Address, On Thursday night at the Methin dist Church by Professor J. II. nAR LISLE, of Wofford College, Spartan burg, was heard by an apprecia tive audience, and listened to with much interest. The subject-Sabbath Schools-was presented in a new and forcible manner. Mr. CAnLm:CJ.'s earnest depth of feeling in what he says, carries home his argonents with peculiar (force. His illustrations are most aptly made. His citation of examples, and the moral with which he points themn dovetail vo beautifully into the subject-matter of his adldress, that it renders his style fascinating in the extreme. And withal there is .o much pathos, that he plays upon the emotions of the listener's heart with OarPHEAN skill. We take the liberty of publishing part of a letter receivedl from our form er fellow citizen, WV. E. ADGER. BOSSIER PAnIISu, LA., -July 29, 186-7. Our crop will be ligig this year. On the hills the crops look v'ery well, but suffering for rain at this time, but not more than one half of the lands is planted this ye-ar; the crops on the riv er look badly except on some small patehee~ that were not overflowed. Onaa great many places where they have made two bales to the acre, they will not make one bale to five acres, and on some places not one bale to twenty five'acres; nearly all the corn was killed by the overqow, some planted after tho water w.ent off, but the cut Wbrnm eat nearly all of It. I hear. that t4e eaterpillor and boll worm have witfienced 'on the cotton, but I have seIro to.eowe this year. Mty crops looks~ *ehl. 'did not have more than gighat acres dutroyed by the ove w, butI it ?fas tieen a bard task for Wto keep the vreeds and grass down ; the freed ~pgg don't hn4 thohsielves waraing,0< *uso f am dia"hj will not- workf much more. On somnE lades I lear'n the7 have stpped work, when theyI are'getting a part of the erop ; they say the crop is Inade. If I can inake a living at anything else, I don't think I will try the free legroes again, although I ought not to complain of my crop as it is so iuch better than a greatt niany others. If I can save iny crop I think I will make eight or ten bales to the hand. We are laviig a great deal of sick ness, most of it congestion of the worst kind. We have lost several of our best citizens, amongst then was Thomas Wilson, (brother of Dr. J. D. Wilson,) Mrs. James Herron, and Mr. Benjamin Stewinan,-he died last week, leav ing a wife and an infant one nionth old. lie was in business in Shreves port and doing well, Father has been quite ill with con jestion of the bowols and stoniach ; f two weeks, we expected hini to die at any moment, but lie rcco% cred from it and is improving very fact.
