By request, we publish this week, General Hampt?n's letter on the duties of the hour. In so doing, we have necessarily omitted our usual amount of light literature ; but we trust that our readers, who delight in fiction and humor, will bo willing to yield to the oll-ab sorbing topic of tho day?politics. Our Thanks Are returned to our worthy friend down stairs, Mr. T. C. Ilubbcll, for a saucer of Lima Beans, weighing?the beans, not the saucer? nino ounces. We felt like migrating to Peru, after eating them: for, like Lima, they were ?capital. Fire. On Saturday last, tho dwelling house of Rev. A. F. Dickso.n was consumed by fire. At the first alarm, the engines repaired promptly to the spot; but owing to the high wind prevail ing, and the headway the lire had already made, ere an alarm was given, nothing could be done, except to save tho outbuildings from destruction, which duty was energetically ac complished by our gallant firemen. A burn ing cinder from Sir. DiCKSON's house was blowu a great distance, to the roof of Captain T; A. Jeffords' residence : but the timely ?discovery of it by passers by, and the prompt assistance of the citizens and firemen, prevent ed serious damage. Mr. Dicksox's residence was not covered 1>y insurance, aud his loss is quite serious. lie lias the sympathy of'tin cutire community; and wc trust this sympathy will be manifested by material assistance. Wo havo rccoived the following from a friend at Brauohville, and rejoice with him in tho signs of prosperity that nttracted his atten tion, during a briof respite from tho trying scones of commercial lifo: Bua-noiiville, S; C, Sept., 4, 1807.' Mn. Editor :?I think it not out of place to tell you something of tho trials of the mer chants of B-. Wo have passed through a sovoro ordeal during the Summer months on account of tho almost entire disappearance of tho "Almighty Greenback" from our midst. I resolved to shako off the gloom that surrouucL ed my drooping spirits by a visit iuto the coun try. As I waded my way along tho winding roads my drooping spirits gradually rovived on beholding the large fields of beautiful Cotton, Corn, Iticc, &c., bidding fair to yield an abun dant harvest, and amply compensate tho fanner for the great drops of sweat,. (by which, wo aro all required to live), besides affording a few superfluous bushels for the merchant. My visit was of Bhort duration ; for, thinking I might lose a dimo, I refrosbed myself, passed a few words with my friends, and returned with renewed hopes. Yours very truly. BOB. Orangeburg Market.
