I have suc ceeded so fur admirably. T have been intro duced lb the clergy, of all denominations, as woll as to the other gentry of the different towns and villages. To these T have explained the object of my mission, :andiin an average dhoy liavo promised a .. hearty eli-opuratiuu Jin ?our scheme. They would advise their peas ants and mechanics who desire to emigrate, to go to South Carolina, and would explain the advantages of our State to them. The pamph let will do agrcat deal of good; I think it is much better than mero newspaper articles, as you will have seen frotu papers I have sent you. Good, substantial farmers as we desire, hardly will read those articles, or will not understand them, while, when their clergymen or their mayor explains .ranttcrs to them from your pamphlet, they sec better into it. Hut should any of those writers in .the Auswjantlercr Zei tung attack our scheme, I shall not fail to answer. I am hopeful that we will succeed the first year, at least to draw a nucleus of good, substantial tanners atid mechanics to South Carolina, who will then, no doubt, if they are treated right, blow our trumpet and draw thou sands after them. The greatest difficulty will be the first year ; after that it is easy sailing. I have appointed au agent at Bremenhaven who will distribute at once on board of o\'cry vessel that leaves | with emigrants a certain number.of your pamphlets, which may induce a great' many to seek South Carolina as their home. I also shall send one copy to every emigrant agent throughout Germany, and will travel myself through Germany, as far as my means will permit. - / Respectfully,'" P. MELCH KRS, Agent of South Carolina. f d 3 1 > i J - j t ? a ? , Coi^ENiTAOKN. July 17, 18i'>7. General John A. Wtvjencr, Commissioner of Immigration, Charleston: Slri:-1?I have returned to Copenhagen after a short trip in the country, and have done as much good for the cause as could be reasona bly expected; but I find that if my mission shall have a good result, T must devote just ns many months as now. weeks to traverse the country, because the people like to talk person ally to a man who has been in America, and is acquainted with the condition of the country to which fjhey want' to; emigrate;, ajid{ I can, in one hour, gi.vp nioro information and answer inovc of the questions, which the reading of 'the pamphlet naturally gives occasion for, than if I received and answered twenty letters. Es pecially those, who have money sufficient to buy a farm arc very particular in their in .quirics. They wish to know what they can ?expeet in return for what they leave. Of 150,000 emigrants, who in the first mouths of the year arrived at New York, only 9000 had no certain place of destination and remained thero; all the others were sent for by friends and relations' who had written to <Jicm and told them of their good luck and satisfaction with their new home. T'hiS is gtiod evidence how important it is that the immigrant* who arrive in our State should be satisfied with their now home. Because if that is the case, the immigration to South Car olina will increase year for your if rightly man aged, .The emigration from Scandinavia is largely on the increase, and the government InVtJ tu put a stop to it by warning the people both through the. press and from the pulpit; hut to no use. The State of Minnesota has appropriated 810 0b'.) for the same purposo as South Caroli na, and has got agents in several northern towns of Scandinavia whero the emigrants pass through, hut I do not hclieve I hoy will derive much lament from it, for the reason, as 1 have stated before, that tho emigrant hap determin ed in what section of America hp wants to locate hitnsolf, hoforo he leaves his old home; more especially such emigrants as have got moans to buy a piece of land. If anything can he done for jhe cause it must he done in (he homo of tho emigrant. Thero is the proper place to speak l<\ him, before he is influenced by others or has c|ptermincd whore to go. Tho Summer Imro is unusually cold and rainy and has retarded tho hay harvest. .Much of the hay is spoiled, and if it. continues in this way, another short crop will be the result, and that will give a new impulse to the emigration.
