This week has bebn a hard tinio for the crops, on account of the cool nights; and wc fear serious injury to corn, if it continue. A friend from above on the Columbia Road in forms us that there was frost on Thursday jjnorning in his vicinity, and similar tidings came from other parts of the District. Wo beg to acknowledge the receipt of the following verses, and commend the sentiment they express to general consideration. Sullivan and three others engaged in the construction of a dwelling house for T. E. Rickenbaker, and had it raised, and under -cover, though not weather-hoarded, fpr want of material. At mid-day on Tuesday last, they ?were eating dinner inside tho frame, under eover of the rnof; when a sudden gust of wind *ame**tfp, "and' without giving the party any -warning, blew the frame to the earth in a few jseconds. The timbers foil all around them, and the shingling covered tlioni up, so that some had to bo drawn out by tho neighbors, who came to their assistance; yet strange to .say, none were seriously hurt, and only one of .the four was much bruised from the aOw'idont. ' In all of the above sentences for a longer term than three -months, provision is made for the transfer of the convicted partieB to tho penitentiary as soon as they cau be there ac commodated, where they are to bo put at hard labor, for the portion of their term uncxpircd at tho time of the transfer. We hope that the results of this session of tho District Court will have a ? salutary-effect upon the evil-disposed in our District, and will touch thorn that punishment will surely, follow tho commission of crime.
