Upon all gross incomes, derived from the following sources, there shall be paid a tax of the per cent, herein specified on tbe aggregate amount received, between the first day of Jan uary, one thousand eight hundred and sixty six, and tho first day of January, one thousand eight hundred and sixty-seven, to wit: Front employments, faculties and professions, includ ing the profession of dentistry, (whether in the profession of the law the profits be derived from the costs of suit, fees, or other sources of professional income,) excepting clergymen, two dollars on every hundred dollars; On commis sions received by brokers, vcnditc masters, com mission merchants, dealers in exchange, (for eign or domestic.) or in mortgages, bunds and other negotiaole papers, five dollars on every hundred dollars; Onthe gross amount of pre miums received by insurance Companies in corporated within this .State, two dollars on every hundred dollars ; On the gross antouut of premiums received by Agencies of Insu rance Companies and underwriters, incorporated without the limits of this State, three dollars on every hundred dollars ; On the gross amount of the receipts of lOxpress Companies, ten ?1??1 - lars on every hundred dollars, to he paid to the Treasury of the Slate; On the gross amount of the receipts of Telegraph Companies, five dollars on every hundred dollais; On the gross amount of the receipts from the sale of pictorial newspa pers, or pictorial magazines, twenty live dollars on every hundred dollars; On the gross re eoipls of newspapers published in this State, two dollars on every hundred dollars; Onthe amount of sales of goods, wares, merchandize, embracing ail the articles of trade for .sale, harter or exchange (spiritnous liquors and the products Of thtS State, anil the unmanufactured products of any.of tins United States, or Terri tories thereof, excepted.) which any person shall have made from the first day of January of the present year, to the first day of January, iu the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred anil sixty-seven; sixty cents on every hundred dollars ; On the amount of sales of good* ware*, and nVovohantli'/.e, embracing all the articles of trade for sale, barter or exchange (spirituous liquors and the products cd" the State, and the uiii. anul'actured products Of any of the United States, or Territories thereof excepted.) which any person shall hinke from the first day of January, one thousand eight hundred and sixty-seven, to the first day of January, one thousand eight hundred and sixty-eight, to be paid quarterly, at the end of eac h quarter, to the several Tax Collectors, fifty cents on every hundred dollars; On the gross profits of National banks, two dollars on every hundred dollars; On the incomes derived from the arts of photographing and daguerroot vping. one dollar on every hundred dollars ; On the incomes derived from saw-mills. Hour-mills and grist-mills, and also from cotton ginned on toll, two dollars on every hundred dollars; Onthe gross incomes of all railroads, (not exempted by law.) one dollar on every hundred dollars; I'miiihil, That where a part of a railroad only is within the limits of this State, the return of its income shall bear the same ratio to its whole income as (lie length of the road in this State hears to its winde length; All persons keeping a hotel, shall pay a tax of two dollars on every hun dred dollars ; All persons keeping restaurants, or eating houses, shall pay a tax of two dollars on every hundred dollars? of gross income; All persons keeping livery stables, -hall pay a tax of two dollars oh every hundred dollars of gross income; Ali persons keeping billiard-tables, shall pay a lax of live dollars, on every hun dred dollars of gross income. ; All persons keeping bowling-alleys, shall pay a tax of five dollar- on every hundred dollars of gross income; All persons keeping bar rooms, whether connected with a hotel or otherwise, shall pay a tn.\ of ten dollars on every hundred dollars of gross income; All persons keeping ferries, shall pay a tax of one dollar on every hundred dollars of gross in come; All persons keeping toll-gates, shall nay a tax of one dollar on every hundred dollars of gros.? income; Uach person, or company, keep ing a public race-track, shall pay a tax of one hundred dollars; Upori every taking out of a charter, except charters for religious, charita ble and educational purposes, shall be levied a tax of twenty dollars; Upon each renewal of a (dialler, liable to tax under this Act. ten dol lars; Upon each public hack, stage-coach, drav and baggage wagon, there shall he paid a tax of ten dollars ; On each ouuibus, twenty-five dollars. The following taxes shall be paid by the parties herein specified for the privilege exor cised by them respectively, to-wit : All persons representing publicly for gain or reward any plays,*comedy, tragedy, interlude or farce, or other employment of the stage, or any part therein, or exhibiting wax-works or other shows of any kind whatsoever, to be paid into the hands of the Clerks of the Courts, (or Magistrate in the tlbvcnco of the (.Merk) re spectively, (who shall be bound to collect and pay the same into the Public Tronsurv. ex copting in ca.sc? where tlic same is now requir ed by law to be paid to corporations or other wise,) ten dollars per day:. All circus exhibi tions, to bo paid at the time, fifty dollars per day; Each and every -person kecpifig a dog or dogs, except one for eaph pjndtatiori, and one for each inhabited lot "Tu cities, towns fitid Vil lages, shall pay one dollar for each dog. Hl' KCl Ali TAX. 1 I The following special tajt shall be levied. to-wit : A capitation tax of one dollar per head on every.male between the ages of twenty-one and fifty, resident'in tbo State on thp find duy. I of February, one thousand eight hundred and sixty-seven, except those incapable of carping a support from being maimed, or from any other cause. If. All taxes levied on property, as prescri bed in this Act . shall be paid to the. Tax Col lector for the District or Parish in which said property is located, except that the tax levied by this Act on Hail road Companies. Express Companies und' Telegraph Companies be re turned to and paid directly into the Treasury of the State. . III. Every employer shall make returns of the names of all persons that are employed by him. and pay the tax of such person or persons, in which ease the tax receipt shall he a good and valid sot-off* in any action lor wages by such employee against such employer. * :;: * V. That the taxes herein levied shall bo paid only in gold and silvereoin. United States Treasury notes, or notes declared to be a legal tender by the (Sovernment of the United States, or notes of National Haul;.-, or the bills receiva ble of this State; and also pay-certifteates of jurors ami constables for attendance 0:1 tin Courts. * * * * * VI I. Each Tax Collector shall attend at the Court House of the Tax District, (or if there be im Court House, at some other public place) daily for one week previous to making bis linn I return, for the receipt of taxes of their respec tive Districts or Parishes.
