r ^__= Correspondence of the Timks. Hews from North PaoolecEtta Jaxk, July 18.?The past week lias been unusually hot and dry, sad crops are ( badly in need of rain. Last Saturday night ( we had a gentle shower thut did a little , toward cooling the air. ^ Almost every farmer has got through work except, perhaps, one or two Airrows,"* ] whiob they are halting to put in after a rata j comes. i We attended the Alliance picnio at Kel- j ton last Friday. 14th inst. It was a big j concern. Everybody was there, it seemed. Our friend, "Kelton Wheel" will no doubt give your readers an account of it this week- I Editor Gantt, of the 1'iedmont Headlight, Judge Hill, of Spartanburg, Messrs. G. ( Walton Whitman and Q. B. Fowler, oandi- } dates for the Legislature, Capt. John It. j * Jefferies, State Lecturer, and Hon. Stan- ( ysrue^Vilson, Senntor'of 8pnrtanburg, were , the speakers. To give even a synopsis of , whet they said would make this article too long lor the space allowed. Our notes | taken would fill at least three columns of the paper, and for us to present such a lengthy manuscript would provoke the ! editor to sav something- he isn't in the habit f saying, 'although ho is snd ha?*alwnys ! been re'a-ly to giro the Alliance a falrv shj* ing and has fought bravely for them, 1 Messrs. Whitman and Fowler confined th?n- * elves strictly to Slat^politics. Cnpt. Jef-* feries dealt directly with Alliance principles and demands, while Messrs. Qsntt, Hill and Wilson each took a broad through and swept ^the field of 8Ute and National politics, to- ' gether with the Alliance demands nod the reform movement generally. Of course, there were contributions of trunks, boxes, baskets, etc., to the stock of viands from other sections of Ut on county, and perhaps from the neighboring counties, but l'ea Kidgo was the focal center and to its sturdy citizens, male tit and female, the success of the occasion may w justly bo attributed. ft' Mr. John F. The same parties that fought the ft j '.Hoper bill fought the amendment establish- G dispensaries. It now appears that some prohibitionists are joining these enemies in the fight against themselves. It amounts to jy this, when they refbse to sign petitions for n good men to be appointed dispensers. ' The enemy wants to make prohibition UI od|ous by making it well nigh impossible to hi get stimulants for medical and ssoramental bn purposes. Tho enemies of prohibition offer- m d and suggested bills in the last legislature ti( of this character. They said : "Tho people Co have demanded prohibition an'd we will give th it to them in such doses so that they will wt repudiate their own demands and disgorge thi tho thing after they have gotten it." Theso stay enemies are working along the same *>0 lino when they enoeurage the prohibitionists = io their purpose to keep down dispensaries. These t'rieuda of the barrooms also know 1 * tlia^ "blind tigers" would flourish under the absolute prohibition, and that there would a. be ftiore whiskey sold by them than will be dispensed in the 8tate with a dispensary in j every county, and that th?w -? - ? -/ ui mem; would get (ho profttflk P w I The probibitiooiets should lend their in- '' fluence to the estab ishmeut of dispensaries L under tlie law as it is, and when they have boon established ih?y can use their influence -v to bare them coufii)td stylos for medical and f ~ / saoramenUl purposes. We will then have \ exactly what the real prohibitionists fought A / tor iu the last election and labored to MCDt / have enacted by the iaat legislature.
