Blind and Satk Factory? A JJiscrtplion

Tktl'rcraulione Against Fire.
A^ong (be many evident ea of^the growth and
proP*T*'y of Charleston there is none, perhaps,
m-ce cheering or more complete than that which
p afforded by the extensive factory of Messrs.
Y. J'. Russell A Co., at tho east end of liosel
,-treet.
TItK MAW FACTORY
is located in a spacious building, three-stories
in height. Upon the first floor, tho principal
ftaturo is an immense lathe, upon which huge
sticks of timber are turned into columns and
pillars. There are also other machines used in
preparing material for doors, sashes and blinds
The machinery of the entire factory is driven
by a powerful engine located on this floor, the
boiler b*mg in a fire-proof outhouse adjoining.
There is
A r I. A.XI 5(1 MACHIKF,
a complication of cogs and wheels, hut jn itself
the perfeolion of mechanical skill and ingenuity.
A rough board is run through it, and, by the
single process, comes out planed on both sides,
and tonguod and grooved ready for use for ceiling
and flooring. On the second floor, where
the material prepared below is glued together,
M PA till* latitat Ult l\tw\ oaninntu in *M n
chlnery. In tho manufacture of blinds, for instance,
no work at. all is performed by hand.?
The slats arc cut, plaued nod trimmed to the
proper site by machinery. The side pieces arc
put into a machine that grasps tjiem and punches
the holes into which tiie slats are fitted, and,
in icss time almost than it lakes to tell it. the
blind ia ready to be glued together. * In making
DOORS AM) WINDOW FllAMES,
nil the moulding, morticing. dnve-tai!ing and
pinning is done by machinery, and there is little
need fbr other human help than such as is
necessary to direct, and manipulate the machinery
Tho stuff is all cut out ami shaped on the
second floor. It is then left to dry and season
for fevoio! weeks, ard is finally put together and
carried up to the store room on the third floor.
Here the glaring and painting is done, and the
sashes, blinds and doors of allsises and descriptions
are stored away to fill orders. Hut it is
not alct.o to the making of windows ami doors
(hat tho work is confined. There is now in course
of erection
A SPACIOUS CARPENTER PHOr,
which will be supplied with implored machineiy,
and in which will ho built all the separate
parts which constitute tho framework of a house.
At this time the firm are taking orders for the
i:ivvui-ii w? uvun?, mvijr |>?ri ui wi.icu is yum
in their establishment, and sent ufT in detached
pieces. The facilities for doing the work arc
of course ample, ami houses aru 'requcntly cut
out, as it were, anil sent off to distant pavls of
the State to he erected. Messrs. W. P. Russell
& Co. have associated with them, as superintendent
of their establishment, Mr. Wm C.
Speir, an active and energetic nrchitoct and mechanic,
and plans and specifications of buildings
cun now be bad at tho factovy.
Tho economy with which the entire establishment
is liibiiugod is worthy of rude The
itrcoutbh rou ihk chkvi!ntiso of rrnr.
arc uumorou*. n,? ,unin building is an
enormous cistern, and on every ttoo, placed
racks of buckets filled with water, which are
every evening taken down and placed on the
floor iu different parts of tho building. Put. the
most ingenious feature of the entire economy
of the establishment is in tho management of
the watchman system. The night watchman Is
r.rmed with an instrument called Ruerk's watchman's
clock, which he has to oarrv around with
liiiu, and w hich is itself a triumph of mechanical
art. ft has si* keys which are locked up in
little boxct placed in different portions f tho
premises; and tho watch i* run in such a w.?j'
that the watchman Iras to visit each of these
station boxes once every thirty intitules <luring
the night. Should he miss a round the dial of
tho clock fells the tale in tho morning, ami the
sleeper is fioed. So perfect is the mechanism
of litis instrument that by no possibility can the
watchman evade his duty without detention, and
the station boxes being pieced iu such positions
as to curry hint through the entire premises
onec overt half hour, the . retention to the place
?! ??. . ' ,< ? r?H iic lllttile by
Hit nut a connivance. The business head of the
firm,
mb. w. i*. llusskfi.,
is an energetic ntuu, and has by bis own individual
effort built up the largo factory which now
bears his name. The establishment is & monument
of sharp practical business talent, an 1 a
visit to the place and an examination of its <le
mm ?n" intricacies will amply repay the visilor.
The factory gives employment to about
sixty pcr*ou& who nro kepi busy supplying the
demands of a business thnt is increasing daily.
???
Tut. Coi.ottko Militia.?The lovers of peace
ami order throughout the State will regret to
learn thnt steps arc being taken in various sections
to orgnuiie colored militia companies. So
preposterous does the measure seem, that when
first we heard such a movement was on foot, we
were loth to believe it, and only credited the
story as an idle sensational rumor. But our
doubts, we regret to say, were unfounded, and
while companies have already been organized in
somo localities.
We deprecate this movement, and hope our
colored citizens wili reflect before taking a step
which cannot confer the least possible benefit
upon thoin, either as it class or individually,
while it may possibly involve them in trouble,
to the detriment of both races, and cause a repetition
of the troubles of only two years ago,
from which this immediate section lias not yet
recovered. Surely, neither the whites nor the
blacks desire a recurrence of those troublous
times. We do not speak menacingly. ? Yorkville
Enquirer.
