TO SCOTLAND. BT R. C WATKBSTO?. Land of try fathers ! in my heart I cherish ferveut love for thee : Land ?here the good bare borne their part, And straggled to be fro? 1 Land of the dark brown heath, and ro-ky glen, Of^l'-rious mountain heights, and noble heart? ed men. Here Solway spreads its sheet of hine, And Lomond's ware io beauty lies ; And Bracklin's torrent thunders through, Where shadowy forests rise ; Here peaceful lakes are sleeping in the san, And rirers through the glens, tike threads of silver, ran. Here patriots lived, and dared to die, Ay, die, they could not live as slaves, And now, beneath the arching sky, A nation venerates their graves; And ages yet to come shall proudly tell Where Bruce so bravely fought, and noble Wallace felL And here the Covenanters stood And died upon the soi! they trod ' For what they deeetned their country's good And for the cause of God; Here in deep caves and in lone vale and glen They lived as martyrs lire, a jd died as Chris? tian men. And here have poets sweetly sung, The softest strains of Scottish song; Here was King James's wild barp strung, And his rare music borne along; While Michael Brace and Allan Ramsay, still Lire in those ancient songs that ring o'er lake and hill. And Burns-ay, Burns, whose touching notes Are now on every nation's tongue, Where'er tho voice of music floats, Or "Auld Lang Syne" ls sung ; Here breathed sweet Nature's bard roch words of love. As move the heart to tears, and raise its thoughts above. Here the Last Minstrel tuned hts lay, Here Branksome's towering turrets stood, Here warrior's met in deadly fray, At Flodden Field and Holyrood ; Here lived Fits James; and here, 'mid moun? tain brake Floated, in her light skiff, the Lady of the Lake. Here lived those mighty heirs of fame Whose minds will never bo forgot, Long as the world can breath the name Of Burns and Walter Scott; They loved thee; and made dear thy hills and vales By their heroic songs and legendary tale?. Thus honored land, within my heart I cherish fervent love for thee, Laud where the good have bora their part and Struggled to be free; Land of the dark brown heath and rocky gton, Of glori?os mountain height?, and nobfc-hearC ed men. [Selected for the Watchman.] PROFANE SWEARING. A moment's calm consideration will convince anj rational person of tbe im? propriety of this custom, which is inexcusable, irrational, vulgar and pro? fane. IT IS INEXCUSABLE. There is less temptation to this vi ce than to any other. Some vice? are ex? cused by calling them constitutional, but as Archbishop Tillison observ?e, "oo man is born with a swearing eonsti? tution " It cannot procure credit to an assertion j because it is oftener used to confirm a rash or doubtful saying than a plain truth. The mao who swears seems to doubt his own veracity, and well may others suspect it ; for can wc believe he will be true to man who is false to God ; besides the custom ot swearing to truths may insensibly lead a man to swear to falsehoods. Persons addicted to this practice scarcely know when they swear; and some whoo reproved for it, bad sworn that they did not swear. IT IS IRRATIONAL Wbat'greater proof of stupid igno? rance can be given than to use words without meaning. You cal! upon God shocking to repeat) to damn your eyes, your blood, your soul', birt have you con? sidered what damnation is? It is a word of dreadful meaning; it is to be pronoun ced accursed of God io the day of judg? ment. It is to have the word, "Depart from me ye cursed into everlasting fire, prepared for the devi! and his angels," but surely you do not mean this. IT is VULGAR. That some gentlemen swear ia too true, but it can never he deemed the mark of a gentleman ; for it is a vice common to the vilest characters io the lowest ranks of society. It produces the most disgraceful equality-it puta the honored, the learned, the polished and the delicate upon a level with the moat ignorant and depraved. Il is profane. G. "My son," said a man- of cfouhtful morals, putting bis hand on the head of a yoong urchin, "I believe Satan has got hold of you." "I believe so too," was thc reply.
