EQUALITY. An old ?Scotch tnioister, ou being asked to preach a sermon in favor of equality, at a time of great excitement cn the subject, said at the close of a sermon in MI bs ta nee as follows: You ask mc to preach a sermon on equality. Siuce that time I bave ranged in vision through the vegetable world ; I saw flowers of equal lustre and perfume, trees of unequal height a-jd value, but there was no equality. I passed through the animal kiugdom, aud saw the trained horses and the fierce beast of prey, thc linnet and the huwk"tbe sparrow and the eagle, the sheep and the horse, each occupying a rt larive sphere. In the sea where the mollusc and the wintle, the dolphin aud the shark, the tituid and the fierce, each properly or. g:?nizcd :-:nd doing its proper labor, but I saw no equality. Lastly, I entered the gate of heaven, and on a great white throne sat the Judge of tne l.'niverse ; cherubim and seraphim fell before him, angels of lesser degree did him bidding. I found seven heavens rising above each other, but no equality there. I gazed on the stars, and lound "one star different from another star in glory," but there was no equality. So you sec that there is no equality in all God's vast kingdom. S ILT-ITS EFFECT ON THE BLOOD' Dr. Stevens, a French physician and surgeon, saw a butcher kilting a pi?:. Ile observed that he stirred the blood oi thc animal an i added a handful of common salt to it while stirring, which immediately mc.de it crimson, and if stirring be continued, the blood remain? cd fluid. The change of the color of the blood awakened his curiosity. The batcher could give no explanation of the phenomenon except that it kept it from jellying and spoiling. Pr. Stevens seized a vessel, caught some blood, and made several experiments by putting salt in ir, and found that the blackest blo)d was instantly changed to alright vcruiillion \>y salt. 'Oh,' said he, 'here is a fact which may lead to a |ractical rule.' . Ile had observed in case of yellow fever in the army, that the blood drawn j was very black and fluid, aird on adding salt it bacomes vcrmillion and retains its freshness, whereas putridity of the blood is oue of t!ie characteristics of thc yellow fever. Ile therefore abandoned the UMial m dc of treating it, and give bis patients a mixtue of various salts, and in a very short time reduced the mortality of fever in the West Indica from one in Sve to one in fifty. ..-??>??
