Last week we. submitted some general thoughts Of our Own On tho subject of commercial for ti li ?ors-tho effect of their uso upon the planter, and consequently upon the country, Ao. We find in the "Plantation," taken from tue "Southern Farm and Homo," a calculation iu fig? ures which puts the matter in strong point and force. So much have wo boen impressod with the subject, that we h ave transferred the art ?clo ia question to oar column?, for the consideration of oar planners.', The present, depression evi? dently results from' excosslvo Use of coramoroial fertilizers, increasing the amount of ootton pro ducod, and consequently reducing the prlco of the staple, white leaving but little margin whon expenses are paid Horse stealing. Among the many classes of theft now rife in the country, that of horse stealing is not tho least prominent. Some time ago a fine animal, the property of Mr. J AV KS M. J KN NI sos, who rostdos ia the Providence neighborhood, was taken from the accommodation stables of Mr. J. T. SOLO? MONS, of Sumter, in tho'broad light of day and when the streets were thronged with pooplo. The thief, too, rode oarelossly along with a wagon, on the night foliow':.^ thu ?,hoft,' and quietly stopped for the night at M-. UROQDON'S place, some eight miles only fron. town. ' This animal is still unheard from. Now Mr. TURNER DAVIS ls victimized in tho same way, as will be seen from bis advortise ment. His fine bay horso was taken from the stables of Mr. J. B. WIIITK, on Thursday night last, and op to the present timo, he has been unable to recover him. Our people will begin to look to" their stables as well as to their gin houses and oom cribs.
