Thc first balo of now cotton was brought to Sumter on Monday last, by Mr. C. C. MYERS, son of our esteemed fellow citizen JOSHUA MYERS, of Pro? vidence. After spirited bidding, it was bought by Messrs. GREEN & WALSH at j cents. This is the third year that Mr. MYERS has brought the first bale of j new cottou to market. FREIGUT REDUCED. We beg to direct the attention of all interested to the reduoed rates of freight to and from Charleston, as advertised by Mr. S. S. SOLOMONS, Superintendent of thc the North Eastern Rail Road, on another column. In ordor to reach these low rates, Mr. SOLOMONS carries the freight over his otvu Road at nominal figures. It brings down tho expense to about a fair charge, wcro there but one road traversed, and renders the ? Charleston market accessible to our poo I pie. TUE OLD ENGINE MADE NEW. Through the contributions of our chi? tons, and the Superintendence of Mr. A. W. SUDER, a marked improvement Us been wrought upon tho machino manned by thc Wide Awake Fire En? gine Company of Sumter. TO BB AVOIDED. When speakers on both sides alternate addresses to a mixed orowd, it tends to disorder* When one side ia evidently getting the best of the argument, the other is tempted to quash proceedings with a riot. Henoe tho Scott ring re? sorted to bricks at Chester, whon they were getting the worst of the debate. Let each side hold its own meetings, and address the aaaie people at different times. A mixed programme must lead to trouble and ehould be avoided. The Union Reform wants order and honesty. The Soottites evidently prefer the oppo? site. SOUTH CAROLINA OENTBAL RAH BOAB. SUMTER, S. I was not until a later hour, half pas too, that thc affair was fully made knowi by the fact one of the principles, Mi Ludlow Cohen, was 6rought to the city and to his residence, wounded fatally ii the encounter. Tho principals to this fatal affair wer Captain Riobard F. We ar unable to state tho causes leading t this "code," except from universal rc port, whioh bases the difficulty upon private quarrel between the two gentle men named, which oould not, it seemi be adjusted without a resort to tb field. There is something 1 inexpressibly touching in the apootuole of prema? ture decay.
