TUE NOTORIOUS ELI ITIACK Who was somo yvara ago sent to thc Penitentiary from this county for stealing cotton, made his escape about a year ago, and is now running at large, made his appearance in our town at about twelve o'clock Monday last, armed with a double barrel shot gun loaded with buckshot, and went directly to tho jail to see his brother now confined therein, and awaiting his trial for a sim ?lar offence. While in conversation with his brother, Butler Spears, and Andrew Jackson, State Constables, made n dash upon Lim, seized hold bl his gun. Hobo ing a very stout athelctic mun, succeeded in wresting it from them-inflicting a severo blow upon thc head of Jackson, and then fled ; Spears in tho mean time firing several shots at him. Ho was seen to stagger and fall twico as though he was wounded, but finally escaped to thotwoods. It it paid that this desperado has com? mitted various outrages since his cscap from tho Penitentiary. Amongst others, two rapes upon colored school girls. Wo learn also, that on Thursday night last, at or near Maysvillo, he was sur? rounded in a houso by nino colored men, all well armed, who demanded his sur render, but ho refusing doliborately walked out and commenced firing into the crowd, who Akcdadled io double quick time.
