BEAUMONT [For the Sumter Watchman.] A Talk with the Children. NUMBER FOURTEEN-GEESE. Christmas and New Year's day have como and gone. Court week haS passed. Mr. Hubbard aod his Constabulary force, with their seven shootcrs,*hu ve ceased to arrest our people. Our peaceable citizens who were arraigned as the Ku Klux Kevian, he bceu honorably acquitted. Our firemen have given their supper, and enjoyed their fiuo speeches, and as . things have onco more resumed their normal condition, we propose to renew our pleasant little talks ou difierent top? ics. Suppose wo try geese, of which there are, several species. There are in our country, three varieties of domestic geese. The. variety which is most com? mon is readily recognized by tho mule being always white and tho female of a dark dun color, sometimes partly white. ? Another varioty has a larger body and a ' neok more arched, with red bills, and feet like the former kind. Tho third variety are much larger, with longer neoks and a blaok bill with a hump .upon it, which gives it a peculiar ap? pearance. They are called China geese. Both male and femalo ara of tho same peouliar dun oolor. All these varieties look beautiful on the wator. Their cheerfulness, blue eyes, and grace upon the water, make them very attractive birds. Nature has provided goso with a web between thoir toes, as a means of pro? pelling themselves in tho water, and strsnge to say, if a hole is cut in this ' film, so as to destroy a greater part of it, tho web will all grow up again. Your Grand Pa once bought quito a number of geese, and fearing that they might stray off, marked them by cutting a hole three quarters of an inch in diameter, in tho web of each right foot, but to his surprise, npou examining them a few months after, he found tho holes all grownup and the marks entirely ob! it ? erated. Geese arc remarkable for their conju? gal atfection, and mayservo as a valuable example of constancy. \V hen once they mate or marry, they aro as true to each other as tho most exact, virtue can de maud. They are very cheerful, never indulging in low spirits, as some silly people do, but enjoy lifo to tho highest v degree. They arc given to one bad habit, viz. fighting. Tho spring season is their fighting period, and their buttles arc very severe, and tho victory of tho for? tunate one is eelcbruted by loud cries / and cackling. Geese are very vigilant, especially at night. The appearance ol' j a strange person or a sound of an un? common noise, will causo them to cry out io aloud cackle. It is said that tho ancient city of Home was JU cc saved by tho cackling of some domestio geese, which aroused the sentinels, just in timo to prevent its being surprised and sacked. Wild geese aro beautiful birds, cither "' on land, in thc air, or on tho water. They migrato to our country in tho winter, and their carly approach is paid to indicate a very cold, winter. When on the wing, they utter a strange wild ery. There is but a slight difference between tho male and female. They arc frequently captured by hunters in thc upper part of thc State, and are quite an ornament in a yard of poultry? They u ev or lay eggs, however, or ra iso young ones, but keep to themselves, and appear as strangers in at-traugo laud. Tho largest and most beautiful of thc goose tribe is tho swan. They aie luuoh larger than the common goose, have long arched necks und ure beau ii lulas they float, swim and divo. Thc old one? defend their young with great bravery and force, striking fiercely both with their bouks and wings, and have been known to break thc arms of men, . , who have ventured to> rob their-ncsts. ?our GUANI) PA. .-Tho champion butter of a Western city olaitns also to bu the "universal sympathiser," because ho bas felt for tvery ono. -Why is t the happiest ofthovowls?
