ON ELECTROCU FIONS. )R. M'DONALD'S STATEMENT ON THOSE AT SING SING. t Fully Confirns the Accounts Given by the Usnited P,es sevico ,i- hsa#1ty Iutautanteous and Death Speedy. ALBANY, N. Y.,Oct. l.-Dr. Carlos F. lacDonald, who superintended the )lectrocu tions at Sing Sing, to-day made ,he following statement which in each )articular verrifies the report of the .;ited Press sent out on the day of the .lectrocution. In this supplementary eport ot tf,, details of the executions vhich took place at Sing Sing prison ast July it is stated that in all these ,ases, one electrode was so applied as o cover the forehead and temples and he other--a large one -the calf of the -ight leg, except in the case of Josepb A ood, in which it was applied to the eft leg, in consequence of the existence )f an itleer on the right one. The elec rodes were thoroughly wet with a ioltition of sait and water before the mrrent was turned on and were mois Lened at intervals when the current w as in terrupted, with the same solution Lit rown on them with a syringe. Slocum entered the txecution room at 4:33 a. m. imd passed at once to the chair. The restraining straps and electrodes were tdjusted expeditiously and without re distainice, and the electric circuit was .ompleted for the first time at 4:35. rho first contact la-sted twenty-seven econds at the end of which time it was )roken but the pulse was still found to )e oeating strongly, and between one, imd twelve minutes later a noisy re tpiration became established with con nidlerable regularity. The current was mmedi itely reapplied and continued or0 i6tseconds. Respiration had then ,eased entirely and permanently and Ie heart beats had also ceased. After iloctim's body had been removed con 1iltationl alliong the medical gentlemen preient. soelled to point to the unani Llnolls feeling that it was quite possib:e hat the long continuance of the current was not so significant, a factor in pro luCing rapid cessation of the heart beat, as the sudden impact of making ind breaking the contact and for that reason the next execution was conduct [d a little differently. Ilarris A. Smiler entered the room at t A) a. in. The first contact was made at 5 08 a. ii., and continued ten seconds; was t1i(:n interrupted to allow of wet ting sponges; was again imade for ten seconds and again the sponges were wet, and a third contact was made for ten seconds. Three contacts of ten sec onds each were thus made, at the end of' which time there was no effort at respiration, bit the pulse was beating so firmly and regularly that it was (eeied expedient to again close the cirettit for ninetenn seconds, at th3 end of which time the heart had perman ently ceased beating. It will be no(iced that in the first ease the pressure was applied for fifty three secons In all. At the end of that time respiration and the heart beats had ceasedl permanently. In the sec ond case at the end of three contacts or ten seconds each the heart beat was still strong and at the end of the fourth application of nineteen seconds that had entirely ceased. It will appear froim this that the duration of the cur rent was quite as important an item as the making and breaking of a contact.. I t was therefore determined to make the contact in the next case a little longer, interruptions being necessary to Ie-lit of moistening the sponges. .oseph Wood entered at 5.32 and the lectric current was completed at 5.31. 'Pb ree contacts of twenty seconds each w'ere made at~ the end of which time respiration had ceasedl permanently; no pulse Sou(Otld bie felt at the wrist and no heart beat wvas heard on examination. ,J ugiro eniter( d the room at 6 a. in. A t E1.12 a. m. the current wvas closed for the first time, and three contacts of fit teen seconids each followed, with two in t ermissions of twenty secondis each. When t.he current was finally broken a very slight fluttering was relt at the wris'. .lIn this case extreme heat was siou ced in the regioan of the knee above the point where the lower electrode had b eeni ap)plieui and a thermometer held aigainst the skin for only fifteen sec Jiuns ran up 115 degrees, the highest po1 it it registered1. At 11.17 the chest was bared and cessation of the hIeart was confirmed. I'roins the experience had in these eaises, the rep)ort says we are inclined to the belief that, while unconsciousness was inistantaneous and continuous from the first moment of contact in each case, yet, in order to insure that death supiervene as rapidly as possible it was necessary to continute the voltage em llyed in these eases for from fifty to sixty seconds. In each case the temn pseraturie of the water near to and at t he ediges of the electrodes was raised nseai ly, if ni(t qluite, to the boiling point, so as to blister the skini more or less ex tn isiv'ely. '[here was absolutely no wvherte any smoking, charring or burn. lng. A Sesniions st Vlennat. 'VIl-NNA, Oct. 2.--A profound sensa tion ha~s bien created by a dispatch rom liMchienberg, Bohemia, which while announcmng the safe arrival at that place of the Emperor Francis .ioseph, also brings the startlin'; news that during last night an attempgt was mnade to blow up the bridge at Rtosen thal, a suburb of hieichenberg, by meanis of a bomb. Fortunately the plot was discovered and frustrated. It is suip Posed that the bomb wvas placed there in hope of kiihnig the Emperor, whose train crossedl the bridge in question. No arrests have been reported. Smuotheredi ini Cotton seed. ItAI,LEmui, N. C., oct. 3.- Willloughby Saulls, of Wayne county, on going Into his barn, whierein a large quantity of seedl cotton was stored, discovered his live-year-old daughter Mary with her head aind a p)ortionl of her body in a hole in the cotton dead. She had imitated her brother, aged twelve, in digging the hole, and while the latter went to the house she (deepeneid tihe cavity and stuck her head in it, but owing to the heavy presure of the cotton from all sides waus uniable to dIraw herself out and was smiothered.
